Rep. Kim Byung-wook, “The dropout rate of North Korean defectors is twice that of regular students”

People's Strength Rep. Kim Byung-wook (Pohang-si Nam-gu Ulleung-gun, National Assembly Education Committee) announced on the 30th that, according to the data submitted by the Ministry of Education, the rate of dropout of North Korean defectors was twice that of ordinary students.

The dropout rate of North Korean defectors over the past three years was 2.9% in 2019, 1.2% in 2020, and 1.6% in 2021. On the other hand, the dropout rate of regular students during the same period was 1% in 2019, 0.6% in 2020, and 0.8% in 2021. Although the dropout rate of North Korean defectors is on the decline, it is twice that of regular students.

By school level, as of last year, elementary schools accounted for 0.3%, middle schools, 1.8%, and high schools, 2.6%. It is analyzed that as the number of subjects increases and the content of the classes become more difficult as the grades go up, the rate of North Korean defectors who lack basic academic ability to give up their studies has increased.

According to the “2020 North Korean Refugee Youth Survey” conducted by the North-South Hana Foundation, 23.7% of North Korean defector students complained of difficulties in keeping up with school classes, and students chose 'study and academic support' (57.2%) as their top priority for support they want to receive. did.

On the other hand, it was found that North Korean refugee students were passive in their participation even though there was a mentoring program for them. Although the Korea Scholarship Foundation is promoting a mentoring project that supports multicultural and North Korean refugee youths with learning guidance and counseling for career and concerns, the participation rate of North Korean defectors was only 2% as of 2021.

Rep. Kim Byeong-wook said, “North Korean refugee students vary in their learning level and adaptation patterns depending on their educational gap period, personal characteristics, and home environment. We have to be more careful to avoid it,” he said.
