Hyundai Motor Company's operating profit of 1.886 trillion won in the second quarter of this year despite a shortage of semiconductor supply

-Reporter Moon Hong-cheol

Based on IFRS consolidated results for the second quarter of 2021, Hyundai Motor Company sold 1,031,349 units △Sales 30,326.1 billion won (automotive 24.674.2 billion won, finance and other KRW 5,651.8 billion) △ Operating profit 1.886 trillion won △ Ordinary profit 2 trillion 502 billion won △ net profit of 1.98 trillion won (including non-controlling interests)

Regarding the business performance in the second quarter of 2021, a Hyundai Motor official said, “Sales increased significantly compared to the same period last year due to the effect of the COVID-19 base effect and global sales recovery. We continued the recovery trend thanks to volume growth and profitability-oriented sales.”

He continued, “The demand for automobiles in major global markets is expected to continue to recover due to the increase in vaccine vaccination rates in major countries and the continued economic stimulus measures of each country. It is expected that it will take a long time for the situation to normalize as the situation continues in the third quarter.”

First, Hyundai Motor sold 1,031,349 units in the global market in the second quarter of 2021 (April to June). This is an increase of 46.5% compared to the same period last year (based on wholesale sales).

In the domestic market, despite an increase in SUV sales mainly due to sales of new SUV models such as the Tucson, Ioniq 5 and Genesis GV70, sales in the same period last year, which increased significantly due to the reduction of individual consumption tax, etc., compared to the same period of the previous year due to a decrease in production due to a shortage of semiconductor supply. It sold 206,682 units, down 11.0%.

In overseas markets, sales in major markets grew significantly last year due to the base effect of Corona 19, and the effect of new car models of major models was added, resulting in sales of 836,667 units, up 73.6% from the same period last year.

Sales increased 38.7% year-on-year to KRW 30,326.1 billion. Sales increased as the effect of volume increase from global wholesale sales, which increased significantly, offset the impact of the depreciation of the won/dollar exchange rate. The average won-dollar exchange rate in the second quarter of 2021 was 1,121 won, down 8.2% from the same period of the previous year.

The COGS-to-sales ratio stood at 81.1%, down 1.9%p from the same period of the previous year due to the continued increase in global wholesale sales and reduced incentives.

The ratio of sales and administrative expenses to sales recorded 12.7%, down 1.6%p compared to the same period of the previous year as the company-wide efforts to cut costs continued.

As a result, the operating profit for the second quarter of 2021 was estimated at 1.88 trillion won, up 219.5% from the same period of the previous year. The operating profit margin was 6.2%.

Ordinary profit and net profit recorded KRW 2.502 trillion and KRW 1.982.6 trillion, respectively.

Based on the accumulated results of the second quarter (January to June), the sales were 2,031,193 units, sales of 57717 trillion won, and operating profit of 3.542.6 trillion won.

Regarding the outlook for the future business environment, Hyundai Motor will continue to recover demand due to economic improvement in major countries and the base effect caused by COVID-19, but it is expected that there will be delays in the normalization of global semiconductor supply, increase in raw material prices, and global inventory shortage due to a decrease in the number of business days in the third quarter. The difficult business environment is expected to continue.

With respect to the global automotive semiconductor supply shortage, Hyundai Motor expects that the situation will gradually improve from the third quarter after peaking in the second quarter, but it is expected that it will take a long time for complete normalization. It is expected that the supply shortage of semiconductors for some items will continue until the third quarter and then gradually improve from the fourth quarter.

In this regard, Hyundai Motor plans to make up for some of the production setbacks in the first half of the year by promoting production growth in the second half of the year through △ securing additional volume by mobilizing company-wide capabilities △ preemptive stock securing through annual orders and △ promoting partnerships with major semiconductor companies.

In order to prevent such parts supply issues in the future, Hyundai Motor plans to continue preemptive efforts such as △continuing discovery of alternative devices, △increasing parts localization rate, △diversifying suppliers, and △preemptive inventory management.

In addition, external factors such as increased exchange rate volatility centered on emerging countries and rising raw material prices are expected to weigh on business activities in the second half of the year.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Company decided to re-implement the interim dividend, which was suspended last year to secure liquidity in relation to the COVID-19 situation, and set the interim dividend amount at 1,000 won (common share basis), the same as in 2019.
