Even if we achieve herd immunity, we can't eradicate Corona. It should be inoculated every year like the flu."

The Central Clinical Commission for New Infectious Diseases (Central Clinical Commission) announced on the 3rd that collective immunity is difficult and difficult to eradicate even if the vaccination rate for the Covid-19 vaccine exceeds 70%. "The Covid-19 virus will become indigenous and should be vaccinated periodically like the influenza virus," he said.

"Even if the vaccination rate reaches 70 percent, the virus will not disappear or end the distancing itself," Oh Myung-don, chairman of the Central Clinical Committee, said at a press conference held at the new site of the National Medical Center earlier in the day.

Chairman Oh Myung-don stressed, "Many people believe that when they reach collective immunity, Covid-19 disappears, masks are taken off, and world travel is free without quarantine, and we will wait for that day, but the virus will disappear or the end of distancing will not follow."

"Even if group immunity is reached, the risk of infection spreading does not immediately become zero," he said. "If we ease the distancing hastily, the trend can resume. "The elderly and the high-risk population will continue to be at risk even after collective immunity is achieved.

Infectious disease experts also believe that the possibility of eradicating Covid-19 is low.

Chairman Oh introduced the results of the international academic journal Nature's questioning of 119 scientists from 23 countries about the possibility of Covid-19, and 89 percent said it would be "indigenous" and only 39 percent predicted that it could be "eliminated."

The reasons for the difficulty in eradicating the coronavirus were five: ▲ weakened immunity ▲ immune avoidance virus emergence ▲ secondary infection prevention after vaccination ▲ vaccination rate ▲ natural virus host.

Citing Israel, which has achieved collective immunity, Chairman Oh said, "Even if a country reaches collective immunity, if neighboring countries do not, mutant viruses can eventually flow in and spread." Israel, the leading vaccination leader, also said it has started quarantining arrivals from seven countries, including India, Brazil and South Africa, for 14 days from today after the recent discovery of a mutant virus in India.

Chairman Oh stressed that raising the Covid-19 vaccination rate should not be a priority, but rather "minimizing damage."

"We don't vaccinate everyone to eradicate the flu," he said. "Even if inoculated only to high-risk groups, we can achieve the desired purpose of preventing the occurrence or death of critical patients," he said. "If we receive the Covid-19 vaccine, we can prevent seriousness or death, and minor symptoms continue to occur." "In the future, the Covid-19 virus will become indigenous, so we have to live with it, and we will eventually get a Covid-19 vaccine every year like the flu."
