그러면 그 같은 성공의 비결이 나오는 원천은 어디인가? 필자는 대장정(大長征)의 힘을 주목해야 한다고 생각한다. 위기에 강한 중국의 힘은 대장정의 역사적 경험에서 비롯됐다고 본다. 대장정을 통해 형성된 위기 극복을 위한 강한 결속과 희생정신, 지도자와 인민의 믿음이 오늘날 중국이 보여주는 놀라운 저력의 원천인 것이다.
필자는 지난 2018년 10월 중국 국제우호연락회 관계자들과 함께 대장정의 핵심 유적지들을 둘러봤다. 그곳에는 하나의 신념으로 함께 뭉쳤던 사람들의 역사가 있었다. 산시성(陝西省) 북부 황토고원에 자리 잡은 옌안(延安)의 허름한 야오동(동굴집)에서 마오쩌뚱(毛澤東)은 수년동안 동지들과 함께 지냈다. 직책과 직급의 차이는 있었지만 차별과 특권은 없었다. 대장정 당시 홍군(紅軍) 지도자였던 주더(朱德)는 50줄의 나이에도 불구하고 자신의 땔감을 구하러 매일 산에 올랐다고 한다. 불굴의 신념과 동지를 위한 헌신만 있었던 진정한 '해방구(解放區)'였던 것이다. 시진핑 주석이 하방(下放)시기 옌안 인근 량자허(梁家河)촌 야오동(동굴집)에서 청소년기를 보낸 것은 대장정의 역사를 체험하게 된 소중한 기회였을 것이다.
