190,000 self-employed people become one-person businesses when the minimum wage rises by 24.7%

Break News Reporter Moon Hong-cheol= A 24.7 percent increase in the minimum wage next year suggests that 190,000 self-employed people with employees will become single-person self-employed.

Currently, the labor world is demanding a 24.7% (hourly wage of 9,620 won → 12,000 won) next year's minimum wage increase.

The Phi Touch Research Institute announced this on the 7th through ‘The Effect of the Minimum Wage Increase on Changes in the Form of Self-Employment’.

According to the Pi Touch Research Institute, a 1% increase in the minimum wage increases the proportion of self-employed people without employees by 0.18%. This is because when the minimum wage is raised, self-employed people with employees cannot afford the increased labor costs, so they fire their employees.

In other words, if the minimum wage increases by 24.7% next year, the self-employed with 190,000 employees will become self-employed without any employees, the institute explained.

Meanwhile, looking at changes in the self-employed in Korea by type, the rate of change for self-employed people with and without employees showed a similar trend, but as of 2018, when the minimum wage rose by 16.4%, the rate of change for self-employed people without employees increased significantly. did. As the rate of change for the self-employed with employees dropped significantly, the gap between the two also widened.

Senior researcher Ma Ji-hyeon said, “A minimum wage increase that does not consider the ability of small self-employed people to pay wages has the side effect of turning self-employed people with employees into single-person self-employed people.” It has to be applied,” he said.
