Korea's AI competitiveness 'infant' level..'new blood' in the US and China

Adoption of AI papers by private companies  Number of cases Sweeped out by US and Chinese companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Huawei

Break News Reporter Jeong Min-woo=

Amid intensifying competition for supremacy in ‘ChatGPT’ and ‘generative AI (artificial intelligence)’, the AI research and development (R&D) competitiveness of domestic private companies such as Samsung and Naver  has greatly increased against global big tech such as Google and Microsoft (MS). appeared to lag behind.

In terms of the number of AI papers adopted by private companies in the world's three major AI societies, American and Chinese companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Huawei swept the top 10.

Among domestic companies, Samsung and Naver barely managed to pull themselves into the top 20. In particular, the number of AI thesis adoptions by all domestic private companies was less than 20% of Google alone.

The top 3 global AI societies are the top 3 AI-related societies among the engineering & computer science societies announced by Google Scholar: △ICLR (International Society for Standard Learning) △NeurIPS (Society for Neural Information Processing Systems) △ICML (International Machine Learning Society) running society).

These papers “accepted” by the “three major AI” societies show that the AI technology competitiveness of domestic private companies is significantly different from that of global big tech, in that they are evaluated globally as a standard for “measuring” AI technology competitiveness.

According to the CEO Score on the 31st, as of this year, May, and 12th, a total of 2,759 papers from 338 private companies have been adopted by these societies. Google took the overwhelming first place with 541 cases (19.6%).

MS (267 cases) and Meta (211 cases) occupied the 2nd and 3rd places. 4th and 5th were Amazon (156 cases) and IBM (118 cases), and the top five were swept by American companies.

Chinese companies such as Huawei (114 cases), Tencent (86 cases), and Alibaba (63 cases) occupied the 6th through 8th places. American   Entrepreneurs   Nvidia and   Apple ranked 9th and 10th respectively.

A total of 106 papers were accepted by domestic companies in the three major AI societies, accounting for only 19.6% of Google, which had the most papers accepted. Of these, 32 AI papers were adopted by Samsung and 28 AI papers by Naver, ranking 17th and 18th, respectively.

Naver, which has to engage in a full-scale AI competition with big techs at home and abroad, including the search market in the future, only 5% of Google's AI papers.

By country, the US and Chinese companies, which are competing for AI supremacy, divided the top 10. As a result of surveying the “nationality” of companies whose papers were accepted in the three major AI societies, “US” 140 (41.4%) and “China” 59 (17.5%) accounted for “about 60%” of the total.

In Korea, 15 companies (4.4%) had papers accepted by the three major academic societies, ranking 6th by country, but the gap with “USA” and “China” was too large.

In terms of AI investment, Korea ranked sixth in the world. According to the 'AI Index Report 2023' recently released by Stanford University in the United States, the amount of AI investment by private companies in the United States last year was the largest at $47.4 billion, followed by China ($13.4 billion), the United Kingdom ($4.4 billion), Israel and India (3.2 billion). dollars), followed by South Korea (3.1 billion dollars).

As a result, the AI R&D competitiveness of domestic companies shows a significant gap with global big tech, and the overall AI investment scale was evaluated as insignificant compared to major countries such as the United States and China.

Among domestic companies, Samsung and Naver led AI R&D. Samsung and Naver were listed in the top 20 in the number of papers adopted by the three major AI societies, and LG (17), AITRIX (10), Kakao (6), and Krafton (3) also had multiple papers of 3 Adopted by the Great AI Society. AItrix is a medical AI technology company that has developed ‘Vital Care’, a patient emergency prediction solution.

In addition, among domestic companies, the number of papers cited in these conferences is Samsung (102 cases), AITRIX (65 cases), Naver (56 cases), LG (26 cases), Krafton (20 cases), and Kakao (12 cases). ), etc. were counted. The citation standard is the sum of the number of citations listed when searching for the paper in Google Scholar.

In addition, the number of AI-related patent registrations in Korea was the highest for Samsung Electronics with 217 cases, followed by Google (174 cases), StradVision (118 cases), Naver (114 cases), LG Electronics (112 cases), and SK Telecom (75 cases). , Infinik (57 cases), and Baidu (56 cases). Stradvision is a software developer for autonomous vehicles, and Hyundai Motor Group invested 11 billion won in 2019.

On the other hand, the competition to develop LLM (Large Language Model) is in full swing in Korea against global big tech. Naver's super-scale AI model 'Hyperclova' is attracting attention as it recorded globally competitive figures in terms of the number of parameters and learning cost.

As of November of last year, among 32 LLMs launched worldwide, Naver Hyperclova ranked 7th in the world based on the number of parameters, and among LLMs with a training cost of less than $1 million, its performance efficiency was rated the highest in the world.
