현대차그룹·LG에너지솔루션, 5조7000억원 규모 북미 배터리셀 합작법인 설립

인니 합작공장 이은 두번째 글로벌 협업..글로벌 전기차 시장 주도권 확보 협력 강화

현대자동차그룹이 LG에너지솔루션과 함께 2025년 미국에 전기차 배터리셀 합작공장을 세우고 연간 약 30만대 물량의 배터리셀을 생산한다. 

 

현대차그룹은 LG에너지솔루션과 26일 서울 여의도에 위치한 LG에너지솔루션 본사에서 현대차 대표이사 장재훈 사장, LG에너지솔루션 대표이사 권영수 부회장 등이 참석한 가운데 북미 배터리 합작법인 계약 체결식을 가졌다고 밝혔다.

 

체결식에서 현대차 장재훈 사장은 “현대차그룹은 글로벌 전기차 리더십을 공고히 하고 전동화 체제로 전환하는데 주력하고 있다”며 “글로벌 배터리 선두기업이자 핵심 파트너인 LG에너지솔루션과의 합작공장 설립을 통해 글로벌 전기차 대전에서 승기를 잡을 수 있는 발판을 마련할 것이다”고 말했다.

 

LG에너지솔루션 권영수 부회장은 “글로벌 자동차 산업의 강자 현대차그룹과 배터리 산업의 선두주자 LG에너지솔루션이 손을 잡고 북미 전기차 시장을 주도해 나갈 것”이라며 “차별화된 글로벌 생산역량, 독보적 제품경쟁력을 더욱 강화하여 세계 최고의 고객가치를 제공해 나가겠다”고 전했다.

 

이번 체결식을 기점으로 현대차그룹과 LG에너지솔루션은 현대차그룹 전기차 전용 공장(Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, HMGMA) 부지가 위치한 미국 조지아주 서배너 브라이언 카운티에 배터리셀 합작공장을 건설한다.

 

양측은 연내 합작법인을 세우고 이르면 2025년 말 생산시작을 목표로 올해 하반기부터 본격적인 공장 건설에 착수한다. 총 5조7000억원(43억 달러 이상)을 공동 투자하며 지분은 각 50%씩 보유할 예정이다.

 

합작공장은 연산 약 30기가와트시(GWh), 전기차 약 30만대 분의 배터리셀을 양산할 수 있는 규모로 지어진다. 

 

합작공장에서 생산된 배터리셀은 현대모비스가 배터리팩으로 제작해 HMGMA, 현대차 앨라배마 공장, 기아 조지아 공장 등 현대차그룹의 미국공장에서 생산되는 전기차에 전량 공급될 예정이다. 

 

현대차그룹은 이번 LG에너지솔루션과의 합작법인 설립을 통해 미국 생산 차량에 최적화된 배터리셀을 현지에서 조달해 고효율ᆞ고성능ᆞ안전성이 확보된 높은 경쟁력의 전기차를 적시에 생산, 판매한다는 계획이다. 

 

특히, 현대차그룹은 오랜 기간 축적한 완성차와 각종 부품 양산 능력을 바탕으로 생산 효율성을 높이고, 전체 배터리 시스템 및 완성차까지 연계될 수 있는 통합적인 품질 관리를 통해 최고 수준의 성능과 안전성을 갖춘 전기차 배터리셀 생산에 힘을 보탤 계획이다.

 

현대차그룹은 검증된 글로벌 양산 및 품질 경쟁력을 갖춘 LG에너지솔루션과의 배터리셀 합작공장을 통해 현대차그룹의 전용 전기차에 안정적으로 배터리를 공급함으로써 폭발적으로 증가할 미국 전기차 수요에 적극적으로 대응할 수 있는 체계를 갖출 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.

이번 미국 배터리셀 합작법인 설립은 인도네시아 배터리셀 합작법인에 이어 두번째다. 현대차그룹과 LG에너지솔루션은 인도네시아 카라왕 산업단지에 연산 10기가와트시(GWh) 규모의 배터리셀 합작공장을 건설 중이며 내년 상반기 본격적인 양산을 앞두고 있다.
