프랑스 인상파 음악가 모리스 라벨(1876~1937)은 1907년 성악과 피아노를 위한 발성 연습곡 ‘하바네라 형식의 보컬리즈-에튀드’ 발표 다음 해 1908년 4악장으로 구성된 뛰어난 관현악곡 ‘스페인 광시곡’을 발표하였다. 작품 3악장이 ‘하바네라’이다.
하바네라의 전통적인 리듬을 바탕으로 겹겹의 선율에 담긴 음색의 풍부함과 감각적인 화음이 어우러진 작품이다. 이러한 바탕이 1895년에 작곡한 두 대의 피아노를 위한 (하바네라)라는 사실에도 많은 이야기가 있다.
라벨의 발성 연습곡 (하바네라 형식의 보컬리즈) 이후 발표된 (스페인 광시곡)이 형식과 내용이 자유로운 랩소디라는 사실은 중요하다. 이는 광시곡(랩소디-rhapsody)의 어원이 고대 그리스어에서 시를 노래하는 사람 랩소이도스(ῥαψῳδός)이거나 시 낭송을 이르는 랩소이데오(ῥαψῳδέω)에서 유래된 까닭이다.
‘꿰매다’ 또는 ‘바느질’을 의미하는 랩토(ῥάπτω)와 오늘날 오우드(ode)로 표기하는 송가(노래)를 이르는 오데(ᾠδή)가 조합된 언어라는 사실은 라벨의 가사가 없는 발성연습곡 전후의 맥락에서 오랜 역사를 헤아린 의식에 대하여 살펴야 할 대목이 많다.
나아가 라벨 작품에 연이어 등장하는 하바네라(Habanera)가 인류의 애환이 담긴 춤이라는 사실은 앞 편에서 설명하였다. 다시 정리하면 영국 민속 무용이 식민지 시대에 아메리카로 전해져 아프리카 흑인 노예들의 삶 속에 녹아내려 중요 거점이었던 오늘날 쿠바 수도인 아바나(Havana)에서 탄생한 춤이다.
이후 선원들에 의하여 에스파냐(스페인)에 아바나의 춤으로 전해져 새로운 춤으로 발전하면서 ‘하바네라’가 되었다. 본디 스페인어로 ‘아바네 풍’이라는 뜻인 ‘아바네라’가 맞지만, 라틴어식 영어 발음으로 ‘하바네라’로 통용하는 것이다.
‘하바네라’의 음악적 형태는 2/4 박자로 특징적인 3-3-2 리듬 패턴을 가지고 있으며 오늘날 세계 주요 춤의 바탕이 되었다. 카리브해 북동부 섬 푸에르트리코에서 기원한 왈츠와 비슷한 춤 단사(Danza)에서부터 룸바 리듬에 재즈적 요소가 담긴 맘보(mambo)와 함께 탄생한 차차차(Cha-cha-cha)는 물론, 남미 아르헨티나에서 꽃피운 세계의 춤 탱고(tango) 등이 엄밀하게 ‘하바네라’가 근원이다.
이와 같은 리듬이 중시된 ‘하바네라’ 음악이 클래식 음악에서 다양하게 사용된 것이다. 그 선구적 사례는 세계 3대 오페라 중 하나인 프랑스 음악가 조르쥬 비제(1838~1875)의 카르멘이다. 이를 살피면 우리에게도 익숙한 노래 비둘기라는 뜻인 팝송 라팔로마(La Paloma)를 만나게 된다.
스페인 음악가 세바스티안 이라디에(1809~1865)는 쿠바를 여행하고 돌아와 1860년 ‘하바네라’를 바탕으로 여러 음악을 작곡하면서 피아노 반주의 가곡 라팔로마를 작곡하였다. 그는 5년 후 무명 음악가로 쓸쓸하게 떠났지만, 그의 음악은 스페인의 민요로 불릴 만큼 큰 인기를 얻었으며 세계의 노래가 되어 지난 163년 동안 1,000여 명에 이르는 세계의 인기 가수들의 노래로 탄생하였다.
비제의 오페라 카르멘 1막에서 집시 출신의 담배 공장 여공인 주인공 카르멘이 휴식 시간에 등장하면서 부르는 아리아 ‘하바네라’의 사랑은 길들여지지 않는 새 (L'amour est un oiseau rebelle)를 기억할 것이다.
세바스티안 이라디에가 1862년 발표한 약속(El areglito)이라는 뜻을 가진 음악의 하바네라 선율을 차용한 것이다. 당시 비제는 해당 선율이 스페인 민요로 파악하였으나 작곡된 사실을 알고 악보에 출처를 밝혔다.
1875년 3월 3일 파리 오페라 코미크 극장에서 초연된 오페라 카르멘은 비제의 모든 열정을 바친 작품이었지만, 실패하였다. 이는 이탈리아어로 진실의 뜻을 가진 사실주의로 정의되는 베리스모(verismo) 문화 운동을 선구적으로 오페라에 도입한 까닭이었다.
집시 출신 여주인공의 분방한 성격을 앞세워 사랑과 열정 그리고 죽음과 배신이라는 파격적인 주제 속에 인간의 그릇된 면면을 솔직하게 표현한 작품에 대한 부정적 인식을 가진 관객들은 4막이 한창이던 때에 모두 떠나 객석은 텅 비었다.
세기의 음악가 비제는 충격에 눌려 3개월 후 세상을 떠났다. 그러나 작품 카르멘은 가장 사랑받는 세계 3대 오페라로 역사에 남았다.
필자가 헤아린 여러 자료를 종합하면 당시 비제의 카르멘 초연 공연에 러시아 천재 음악가 표트르 차이콥스키(1840~1893)가 공연을 끝까지 관람한 것으로 파악된다.
이는 차이콥스키의 교향곡 중 가장 열정적인 작품인 (교향곡 제4번 F단조 Op.36)를 헌정한 전설의 러시아 여성 사업가 나데즈다 필라레토브나 폰 메크(1831~1894) 부인에게 보낸 편지와 어느 저널에 보낸 편지에 오페라 관람 내용과 함께 언급한 (나는 10년 안에 카르멘이 세계에서 가장 인기 있는 오페라가 될 것이라고 확신합니다)라는 내용에서 확인된다. 그의 예단은 적중하였다.
폰 메크 부인은 14년 동안 차이콥스키를 적극적으로 후원하며 1,200여 통이 넘는 편지를 교환하면서 절대로 만나지 않는다는 조건을 내세워 끝내 두 사람은 만난 적이 없었으며 차이콥스키가 세상을 떠난 다음 해 여인도 세상을 떠났다.

장황설에 이어 또 하나의 이야기를 덧붙인다. 우리나라 5인조 걸그룹 (여자)아이들(G)I-DLE)이 지난해 10월 대안적이면서 실험적 의미인 얼터너티브 팝 장르의 누드(nxde)라는 곡을 발표하였다. 이 노래가 오페라 ‘카르멘’의 아리아 ‘하바네라’의 멜로디를 차용하여 화제였다.
노래 제목 누드(nxde)는 영어 누드(nude)를 관통한 우리나라에서 생성된 신조어이다. 이는 자연 상태의 벌거벗음을 뜻하는 네이키드(naked)와 예술적 양식의 나신을 의미하는 누드(nude)를 헤아려 '꾸며지지 않은'이라는 뜻의 신조어 누드(nxde)를 탄생시킨 것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 매우 직설적인 춤과 가사를 담았다.
누드(nxde)의 노래 가사 중 오페라 ‘카르멘’의 아리아 ‘하바네라’ 멜로디 차용이라는 관점에서 크게 살펴지는 대목이 있다. (싸가지없는 이 Story에 무지 황당한/ 야유하는 관객들 You tricked me you're a liar(날 속인 넌 거짓말 쟁이야) 부분이 마치 오페라 ‘카르멘’의 초연 상황과 맞닿은 사실이다.
