CERN는 1954년 설립된 국제공동연구소로, 80여개국 600여 개 기관이 참여하고 있다. 가속기, 검출기를 활용한 힉스입자 생산으로 2013년 노벨물리학상을 수상했다. 우리나라도 2006년 과학기술 협력협정 체결에 따라 검출기 실험, 그리드컴퓨팅, 이론물리 등의 분야에서 공동연구를 추진 중이다.
