브레이크뉴스 박동제 기자= 전 한국 여자농구 국가대표 김영희 씨가 지난달 31일 투병 중 건강 악화로 별세했다. 향년 60세.
동주여중과 숭의여고를 거쳐 실업농구 한국화장품에서 선수 생활을 한 김영희 씨는 키 2m가 넘는 최장신 센터로 국가대표에서도 활약했다.
특히 1982년 뉴델리 아시안게임에 출전했고, 1984년 로스앤젤레스(LA) 올림픽에서는 한국이 은메달을 수확하는데 기여했다. 체육훈장 백마장과 맹호장 등을 받기도 했다.
실업농구와 국가대표에서 활약한 김영희 씨는 일명 ‘거인병’으로 불리는 말단비대증 진단을 받아 건강이 악화됐다. 말단비대증은 성장 호르몬이 과잉 분비돼 신체 말단의 뼈가 과도하게 증식해 손, 발, 코, 턱, 입술 등이 비대해지는 만성 질환이다.
김영희 씨는 말단비대증 뿐만 아니라, 뇌종양과 저혈당 및 갑상선 질환, 장폐색 등 합병증으로 36년간 투병 생활을 해왔으며, 최근까지 요양원에 머문 것으로 알려졌다.
한편, 고인의 빈소는 별도로 차려지지 않았으며, 발인은 오는 4일 부천 다니엘 장례식장에서 치러진다. 장지는 화성 함백산 추모공원이다.
