흔히 우주는 브라만Brahman(梵: 창조의 신이자 세상 만물을 주관하는 ‘우주적 자아’)이다.

[Book Review] Writer Heo Kyung-hee publishes ‘Travel to India through Humanities’ during the liberation of COVID-19

'Looking at India' by Heo Kyung-hee, who majored in Indian language and modern history of India

-Writer Kim Soo-jong

‘Journey to India with Humanities’ was published (publisher=Humanities Walk). The author of this book, Heo Kyung-hee, graduated from the Department of Indian Language at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, worked for a publishing company for five years, and then went to study in India in her late 20s. She completed her master's degree in the modern history of India at the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Nehru University, where she currently works as a publishing editor.

For Indians, it is not easy to properly understand their inner thoughts because the art of processing their emotions internally is quite habitual. The distance between what can be said and what cannot be said. In that sense of distance, we feel that there is a cross-section of cultural differences.

If caste is a major pillar of Indian society, karma is another pillar of Indian consciousness. It is because of the consciousness of karma that the caste, which emphasizes a fixed rank and the fulfillment of its duties, has been able to survive for thousands of years.

Then, what kind of life should we live now to become a better caste and a better human being in the future? Karma believes that you can control the future by controlling your desires in the present. The subject of action is not God, but individual human beings. Man is the absolute ruler and soul of his destiny.

If chains fill us up, they are of our own making. Whether you live with that chain forever or shatter it yourself, the choice is yours. And these choices become the actual choices that shape our lives.

To Hindus, human beings are beings that are reborn. That is, they believe in reincarnation. So there is no need to feel the fear of a long and vigorous life going to nothing. The fact that Upanishad philosophy comes to us today as a new idea can be found in its historical background.

The Upanishads represented the beginning of true philosophy in India, which was about the 'Atman', the 'discovery of the individual'. Often, the universe is Brahman (梵: the god of creation and the 'cosmic self' who governs all things in the world).

Brahman is the Atman (I: individual self), known as the idea of 'I am one and the other'. This philosophy, above all, makes man the master of his destiny. Reincarnation and karma are determined by human actions. Above all, Upanishad philosophy is the beginning of a true human-centered philosophy that requires individual reflection.

In India, where the race and culture of the South and North are different, in the case of the North, which is the political and cultural center where mainly Caucasian Aryans live, family integration includes the 3rd and 4th generations of men and their dependents. In other words, it is male-centered.

On the other hand, in the case of the south, which is the economic center where the women-centered Dravidians with a little dark skin color live, their grandmother and her sisters and brothers, their mother and her sisters and brothers, It includes one's brothers and sisters, one's sons and daughters, and one's sisters' children. Marriages between cousins still remain.

Where life and death are one. A place where you witness the death of others right in front of your eyes. Looking at the roaring pyre, the death of an unknown person is accepted as my death. The corpse waiting to be cremated becomes my own corpse before I know it, creating the illusion of watching the scene of my death.

It's like an out-of-body illusion. A moment of mourning for the dead now. We also have a time of mourning for all of us who are still alive, who will one day die. A place where life and death become one. Where others become myself. This is the Ganges River Crematorium.

Indians do not have to ask who I am within the framework of the social structure of Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Sudra. Social status is already determined from birth. The conclusion is one. Due to the structural complexity within Indian society, Indians ask each other, ‘Who are you?

In other words, if Hinduism pushes me and puts me on an equal footing with God, Buddhism denies Atman by annihilating me. So Buddhism and Hinduism are fundamentally different religions. In addition, while Hinduism accepted the caste system divided into Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras, Buddhism rejected this caste system by proclaiming equality for all people.

Our view of India is dominated by the perception that it is a country of meditation, a country of poverty, and a country of myths. However, in order to understand a country, a serious understanding of its history and culture is essential.

India is known as a country with a very unique religious and social system of Hinduism and caste system, and this belief has been handed down for 5,000 years without being broken by any foreign invasion. How has a strong internal system been maintained without being broken? The power lies in the text itself.

The country where the text exists. A country that maintains and changes traditions in the text. A country where literature becomes culture, religion, and life. In a word, it is adhering to the ‘publishing system of classics with only the titles and covers changed according to the times’.

Indians are discovering God, realizing human duty, and living a real life through this old classic. So India comes to us as a literary, too literary country. Above all, India is a country where history and culture are still alive in that these classic literature are still being read and loved by many Indians.

Indian art dedicated to religion is religious. Although Indian art is religious, there is no such thing as Hindu art or Buddhist art. Rather, it would be more accurate to say that it is an Indian art that arose with themes of Hinduism and Buddhism.

Since the religious nature of Indian art considers symbolism in essence and essence in abstraction important, the raw material of art places great importance on the inner world of the mind. The teachings of numerous saints, such as Gandhi who emphasized the life of truth-seeking, Tagore who longed for his country to wake up from the British colony with language as a weapon, and Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama, who won great compassion, are telling us great realizations in our time.

Learning tolerance, politics requires management so that hatred does not grow, and if hatred is growing, the environment must be changed. History tells us that politics or politicians who foster hatred have led everyone to misfortune.

Even if we don't actively love, if we can at least have a tolerant attitude towards each other, the world will definitely be a little more peaceful. The author learns the spirit of compassion from the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, northern India, and learns that we also need the spirit of tolerance and inclusion.

The dominance of matter does not have long life span. Also, the side effects are not trivial. In addition, the present day of India is reviewed through Gandhi, Tagore, Nehru, and Mother Teresa who lived in modern times. Throughout history, India has been a melting pot. India longed for wisdom even in a situation that could explode at any time.

Based on that wisdom, I dreamed of peace. My life also seems to be located somewhere along the way. Ultimately, I would like to say that I rediscovered the value of tolerance in a life longing for peace and a long journey to find wisdom. It was another name for love, benevolence, and mercy. daipapa@hanmail.net
