59.7% of the people said, “Soaring prices and debt burden will be reduced in the second half of the year”

Soaring price inflation, increasing income uncertainty, increasing debt burden... Inevitably hitting growth rate

Break News Reporter Moon Hong-cheol= It is predicted that private consumption growth, which has continued since the outbreak of COVID-19, could be dampened due to a contraction in consumption capacity due to continued inflation and increased debt repayment burden due to interest rate hikes.

If the recent slowdown in private consumption, which is driving Korea's economic growth, becomes a reality, this year's growth rate will inevitably take a hit.

As a result of a survey on 'Plan for National Consumer Spending in the second half of 2022' for about 1,000 people aged 18 and over nationwide by the Federation of Korean Industries commissioned by Mono Research, a polling agency, 59.7% of respondents reduced their consumption spending in the second half of this year compared to the first half. said he plans to do it. On average, respondents expected consumer spending to decline 3.6% in the second half of this year compared to the first half.

Looking at the income decile, it was found that the lower the income, the greater the plan to reduce expenses. In the case of the 1st decile, which is the bottom 20% of income, consumption expenditure in the second half of the year is expected to decrease by an average of 7.9% compared to the first half, while the top 20% of the 5th quintile plans to spend at the same level as in the first half (0.01%↓) in the second half. .

The most common reason for reducing consumer spending in the second half of the year was ‘inflation’ (46.3%), followed by ‘increasing employment and income uncertainty’ (11.5%) and ‘increasing debt repayment burden’ (10.6%).

By item, consumption of face-to-face services such as travel, eating out, and lodging (20.4%), and semi-durable goods such as durable goods (15.0%) and clothing and shoes (13.7%) are expected to decrease.

On the other hand, it was estimated that expenditure on non-durable goods such as △Food & Beverage (28.4%) △Housing expenses (Jeon/monthly rent, electricity and gas, etc.) (18.8%) △ Daily necessities and cosmetics (11.5%) increased compared to the first half of the year.

In response, the FKI estimated that although related prices for food and daily necessities have recently surged, the estimated consumption amount in the second half of the year has increased because it is difficult to reduce consumption as essential consumer goods.

As risk factors that could affect consumption activity in the second half of this year, the public pointed to △continuous inflation (51.0%), △interest rate hike (28.6%), and △decreased asset market such as stocks (9.6%).

In addition, more than half of the respondents (53.1%) answered that they had insufficient spending power in fulfilling their planned consumption in the second half of the year, and 15.1% answered that they were 'very insufficient'.

When asked about when consumption is expected to be activated, only 4.1% answered in the second half of this year, and about half (46.8%) of the respondents answered that consumption will be activated only next year (2023). The proportion of respondents who answered ‘after 2024’ and ‘no promise’ reached 25.2% and 20.4%, respectively.

As policy tasks for stabilizing people's livelihood and improving the consumption environment, the people selected △ price stability (48.2%), △controlling the rate of interest rate increase (17.9%), and △stabilizing the supply and demand of agricultural and fishery products (11.9%).

Choo Gwang-ho, head of the FKI's economic headquarters, said, "While income uncertainty is increasing due to concerns about an economic downturn, the cost of living such as food continues to rise, and interest rates on loans are increasing, so the people are in a situation where they have to tighten their belts." We need to focus on price stabilization through capacity expansion and support household liquidity through preemptive taxation and financial support,” he said.
