[Contemporary Artist-2 of Korea] Artist Seo Young-seok 'Meeting of ancient tomb murals and folk paintings'

Artist Seo Young-seok focuses on the sun and moon, mountains, birds, and animals based on natural landscapes.

Above all, Seo Young-seok's paintings have a deep Korean sensibility. This is because in his paintings, the spirit of Goguryeo murals, which had the highest spirit as a Korean nation, is deeply embedded.

Basically, I try to meet traditional folk paintings by painting on Korean paper while following the mural technique. In the early tomb mural style, various decorative patterns play an important role in Seo Young-seok's paintings.

His decorative patterns vary in appearance depending on the period and are shaped in various ways.

Also, unlike the main contents of the tomb murals, Seo Young-seok focuses on the sun and moon, mountains and birds, and animals based on natural landscapes.

In composition, as in the composition of murals or setting the theme, the expression is flat, but the expression takes a compositional form.

The patterns of fish and birds harmonize with mountains and clouds to borrow the world of folk tales that flourished in the late Joseon Dynasty.

As a result, his world is called a rare and distinctive artist who combined the worlds of Goguryeo murals and Joseon folk paintings.

The texture, decorative background, and compositional spatial treatment treated with a modern sense harmonize the merits of murals and folk paintings, and the paintings consistently pursued in the traditional folk painting style are noteworthy as works that bring out Korean aesthetics well.

In his work, the overall image of the tomb murals contains an oriental aesthetic value with outstanding vibrancy and colorful colors.

In that sense, it is clear that Seo Young-seok's work is the artist who pursues the most Korean painting.

In general, it may be justifiable to call him an artist who is going to Korea with traditional techniques and styles.

However, it is because he does not stop at it and inherits the world of free-spirited modeling without restraint, as noted by Muneyoshi Yanagi, who first introduced folk tales to the world, in his works.

In particular, with his free-spiritedness and unobstructed imagination, he exquisitely combines the world of traditional folktales and murals. This background is possible because Seo Young-seok has been concentrating on the world of the orient for a long time.

A folk painting, a painting that developed a Korean folk painting called ‘Korean nostalgia’ in a Korean sensibility and abstract composition.

If you felt the world of abstraction in the folk tales, you should see that in Seo Young-seok's world, the ethnicity and philosophy contained in the Korean people from Goguryeo to the late Joseon Dynasty were shared.

Although folktales, which tend to be somewhat decorative, are schematic and tangible, the artist is re-creating the deep world of murals and the sentiments of folktales with fantasy and free imagination today.

This is the essence of Seo Young-jeok's painting world as a warm national sentiment that cannot be tasted in other artists' paintings.

Also, this is the charm of Seo Young-seok and the charm of folk paintings.

Although the formative world of folk paintings is likely to be biased toward subjective interpretation, Seo Young-seok's pictorial symbolic world also has the characteristic of securing freedom based on emotions.

The symbolism given in his paintings and the spirit of continuing the context of the symbolic world that has a long tradition in painting is also the responsibility of the artist. Seo Young-seok's Korean paintings, from the tomb murals to the symbolic world of Joseon folk paintings, are evaluated as the most Korean in the world.

In particular, his contrasting works, which dealt with Mary and the Buddha, are attracting attention. The reason why French critic Gilles Bastenalini said that his “view of nature, color, and form expression are amazing” is probably the reason why he appreciated that point. critickim@naver.com
