[Excavation coverage] The descendants of General Jeon Bong-jun's eldest daughter, Jeon Ok-rye, are still alive!

<A study on the history of the Donghak Peasant Revolution with Choi Hyun-sik>

-Dr. Yongkyu Park

Jeon Bong-jun and his first wife, Yeosan Song, had their eldest daughter Jeon Ok-rye and second daughter Jeon Seong-nyeo. In this article, I would like to take a look at her eldest daughter, Jeon Ok-rye and her descendants.

Research on her eldest daughter, Jeon Ok-rye and her descendants has already been sufficiently published. Hyunsik Choi (1923~2011) wrote <The History of the Gapodonghak Revolution> in 1980 and emerged as a researcher specializing in the Donghak Peasant Revolution. He reveals that he met Jeon Ok-rye in 1969.

Based on genealogy records and data revealed in Donggok-ri, Sanoe-myeon, Choi Hyeon-sik said about Jeon Bong-joon's family line, "The eldest daughter is Jeon Ok-rye (died 1970; Lee Hee-jong, the son of Shinjeong-ri, Bugwi-myeon, Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do), and Kang Geum-rye, the granddaughter of the second daughter. Donggok-ri, Sanoe-myeon. It is said that the eldest son Yong-gyu (drowned in Donggok-ri) was the eldest son Yong-hyeon (disappeared in Donggok-ri). Donggok-ri)” (Choi Hyun-sik, <The History of Gapodonghak Revolution> (gift edition), History of Local Culture, 1983, p. 232.). In other words, Jeon Bong-jun's eldest daughter was Jeon Ok-rye, and her grandson was Lee Hee-jong.

Subsequently, Choi Hyun-sik described the process of meeting and confirming Jeon Ok-rye in the “Finding the families of the leaders of Donghak-gun” in <A Study on Choi Hyun-sik and the Donghak Peasant Revolutionary History> (Applause, 2006, pp. 159-160.).

“Not long after the 2nd commemorative cultural festival ended, a man contacted me. He said that his grandmother was the daughter of Jeon Bong-jun. I set aside ten days and went to see him. He was a man whose name was Heejong Lee” (p. 158).

“I immediately headed to Jinan where his grandmother was with him. At the time, Jeon Bong-jun's eldest daughter, Jeon Ok-rye, was 89 years old.

I directly listened to Ms. Jeon Ok-rye's deeds and read her familyregister. Jeon Ok-rye said that after the Donghak Revolution, she escaped public attention. At the age of 15, she fled to Mai Mountain in Jinan. Jeon Ok-rye, who changed her name to Kim Ok-ryun, said that she lived in hiding as a gongyangju of Geumdang Temple, and when she was 23, she married a man with the surname Lee, and she is today.

As a result of reading and checking her family register, there was no mistake in her story. While making this known to the world, I went to see if the house of Jeon Bong-joon, which is currently being preserved, was actually the house where she lived. She testified that it must have been the house where Jeon Bong-jun lived. She was the one who testified that she was now four khan, and that they were three khan when they lived. She later speculated that the people who had come in and lived there probably increased the space by one, she added.

Jeon Ok-rye passed away in 1970 at the age of ninety. Participating in her funeral, I was compelled to straighten her lapels as it seemed no mere coincidence that she left her world some time after she announced her existence to the world.” ( 159)

As a result of reading and checking her family register, Choi Hyun-sik revealed that there was no doubt that the eldest daughter of Jeon Bong-jun was Jeon Ok-rye (her family register was written as Kim Ok-ryun). Choi Hyun-sik said, "I went to check if the house that Bong-jun Jeon lived in was actually the house she lived in." At the time, she was three khan when they lived,” she wrote, after hearing her testimony that she must have been Jeon Bong-Jun's eldest daughter.

Choi Hyeon-sik recorded the “Embreopsis of the Cheonan-an clan Ms. Okrye” (written by Choi Hyun-sik in 1984) in his book. (Above book, pp. 312-313).

“The Tombstone of Ms. Okrye of the Cheonan-an clan” (written by Choi Hyun-sik in 1984)

There is a tombstone and a tombstone in Sagijeonggol in Mt. Sinjeong-ri, Bugwi-myeon, Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.

Woo Yun-yi, who majored in Donghak Peasant Revolution and was serving as the director of the Jeonju History Museum, is a co-author of the Jeonju History Museum and the Jinan Cultural Center. has published

In this book, Lee Yong-yeop (head of the Jinan branch of the American Association of the United States of America) presents “Donghak Peasant Revolution in Jinan Region” (“Scholar Report on the History of Modern and Contemporary National Movement in Jinan, Jeollabuk-do” (Donghak Peasant Revolution, Ui-byeong Movement, Samil Independence Movement), Jeonju History Museum, Jinan Cultural Center (co-author) ), 2003, pp. 69-77.) was published. Lee Yong-yeop, “4. In “Mrs. Jeon Ok-rye, Daughter of Jeon Bong-joon,” she described Jeon Ok-rye as Jeon Bong-jun's eldest daughter (p. 69) and stated that Ok-rye Jeon married Lee Young-chan, Shinjeong-ri, Bugwi-myeon, Jinan, Jeollabuk-do at the age of 23 (p. 69). In 1984, Lee Yong-yeop published the full text of ‘The Tombstone of Mrs. Okrye of the Cheonan Clan,’ written by Choi Hyun-sik in 1984 (p. 71), and published the weeding book of Jeon Ok-rye. In the Jejeok Book of Jeon Ok-rye (p. 77), she was changed to Kim Ok-ryeon (金玉連), and it is confirmed that she was married to Lee Young-chan.

Jeon Bong-jun's eldest daughter, Jeon Ok-rye (referred to as Kim Ok-ryun)

In 2020, three people including Jo Gwang-hwan, director of the Donghak History and Culture Research Institute, published <Jeongeup Donghak Peasant Revolutionary History> (Donghak Peasant Revolution Succession Society, 2020). In this book, I wrote about Jeon Ok-rye: “According to the genealogy of the Jeon family in Cheonan, Jeon Bong-jun had two sons and two daughters. Jeon Ok-rye, the eldest daughter of Jeon Bong-joon's ex-wife Yeosan Song clan, took refuge as an offering drink at Geumdang Temple, pretending to be Kim Ok-ryun when the Donghak Peasant Revolution broke out. At the age of 23, he married Lee Young-chan and gave birth to Jeon Bong-jun's grandson Lee Ju-seok and had a great-grandson Lee Hee-jong." It is revealed that he had a great-grandson, Lee Hee-jong.

Lee Joo-seok is on the right and Hee-jong Lee is on the left. (Professor Lee Sang-gon's photo provided)

Lee Yi-hwa, who has studied the Donghak Peasant Revolution all his life, described the two daughters of Jeon Bong-jun as follows in his book <Bongjun Jeon, Records of the Revolution> (Thinking Garden, 2014, pp. 266~267.). “The two daughters changed their first and last names and lived in hiding. Her eldest daughter, Ok-rye 玉 禮, escaped fire at the age of 15 and went to Mai Mountain and changed her name to Kim Ok-ryeon 金玉 連, and she was said to have served as a tribute to Geumdang Temple. Her younger daughter is a saint, and her daughter Kang Geum-rye testifies to her family history. So Jeon Bong-jun's blood descent was passed on to his only descendants. Currently, there is no way to find the biological descendants, and the only descendants are confirmed.”

Continuing, Lee Ehwa described Jeon Ok-rye, the eldest daughter of Jeon Bong-jun, in <The History of Donghak Peasant Revolution> 3 (Gyoyuseoga, 2020).

“It is said that Bong-Jun Jeon’s daughters changed their first and last names and lived in hiding. Her eldest daughter, Jeon Ok-rye, escaped from anger at the age of fifteen and went to Jinan Maisan Geumdangsa Temple, where she changed her name to Kim Ok-ryun and she served as Geumdangsa Gongyangju. It was not until she was twenty-two that she married Lee Yeong-Chan, who served as the owner of Gyeongju, and she gave birth to seven children. She couldn't even open her mouth to talk about her father, but she listened to a 1968 mung bean folk song and told her children the truth. Sometimes she was called to the Donghak Peasant Revolutionary Event, and she died in 1970.” .

   Lee Hwa (1937~2020) Teacher

Song Jeong-su, an emeritus professor at Chonbuk National University, who recently conducted an in-depth study of General Jeon Bong-jun's ancestry, explained in detail about Jeon Ok-rye in <The Story of General Jeon Bong-jun and his family>, Hyean, 2021). After reviewing the previous studies of Jeon Yeong-rae, Shin Bok-ryong, and Choi Hyeon-sik (192~198 pages), Song Jeong-su concluded as follows. “As seen in various circumstances, there seems to be no doubt now that Grandmother Jeon Ok-rye is the daughter of General Jeon Bong-jun. Her grandmother, Jeon Ok-rye, had spent her whole life completely hiding her identity even from her descendants for this long, and this case is not only her grandmother Jeon-ok-rye, but also many other people who participated in her Donghak. It can be easily found even in the house. She was afraid that the bondage of rebellion placed on them might extend to her or her descendants, and she had been living in silence from her fear. This will clearly show how harsh the oppression of those who participated in the revolution and their families was after the Donghak Peasant Revolution ended in failure, and how great the fear they had” (pp. 198-199).

As described above, the eldest daughter of General Jeon Bong-jun was found to be Jeon Ok-rye through previous studies by Choi Hyeon-sik, Woo Yun, Jo Gwang-hwan, Lee Yi-hwa, and Song Jeong-su. In particular, on April 15, 1984, after Choi Hyun-sik declared that Jeon Ok-rye was the “eldest daughter of Mr. Jeon Bong-jun” in “The Tombstone of Mrs. Okrye of the Cheonan-an clan,” someone other than Jeon Ok-rye (recorded as Kim Ok-ryun) has been There was no one who claimed to be the eldest daughter and appeared.

But recently something happened to her that she couldn't comprehend. In August 2019, Lee Hyeon-woo, son of Lee Hee-jong, applied for registration of the bereaved family of Jeon Bong-jun to the Donghak Peasant Revolution Participation Review Committee for the restoration of honor, but on December 24, 2020, the notification of the result of the application for survivor registration sent by the chairman of the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Foundation said, “The applicant It is said that he received a notice of the result of the deliberation saying, "Whether or not to recognize the family of the deceased is withheld." Hyunwoo Lee recently told me this.

So far, Jeon Ok-rye has been recognized in academia as the eldest daughter of Jeon Bong-jun. As a reason for withholding in the notification of the result of the application for survivors registration, “Additional fact-finding is needed to confirm the relationship between the applicant and the participant. We will withhold whether or not to admit it.” In the future, I hope that this article will be helpful in conducting an additional fact-finding investigation to confirm the bereaved relationship between the applicant (Hyun-Woo Lee) and the participant (Bong-Jun Jeon) by the Donghak Peasant Revolution Participant's Honor Restoration Deliberation Committee. hispak@hanmail.net
