[Korea Fusion Energy Research Institute develops plasma-based skin protection disinfectant]

The new skin disinfection method using plasma has proven to protect the skin and has excellent antibacterial effects, so it is expected as a new disinfectant method that can replace the existing alcohol disinfectant.

Korea Fusion Energy Research Institute (President Yoo Seok-jae, hereafter referred to as Nuclear Fusion Research Institute) Plasma Technology Research Center Yong-cheol Hong and Kang-il Kim, senior researcher at the Plasma Technology Research Institute, collaborated with ICD and Plarit to create 'radical water' ( Radical: A state that is easily reacted with other substances by being collided with other electrons or ions or excited by the action of a catalyst, etc.) without damaging the skin It has been proven to have an antibacterial effect.

In the case of skin disinfectants that are essential to reduce the risk of infection in medical facilities, alcohol is the main ingredient, and although it is inexpensive and has high sterilization and antibacterial effects, there is a problem that it has a detrimental effect on normal skin cells when used frequently. In particular, as skin disinfectants have been widely used since the spread of COVID-19, the need for disinfectants that satisfy both excellent efficacy and stability at the same time is increasing.

The joint research team succeeded in confirming the sterilization and antibacterial effect and stability of the radical water synthesized with the radicals generated when ‘plasma’, which is called the fourth state of matter, is generated, and confirmed the possibility of using it as a skin disinfectant. While various studies on the utility of radical water are being conducted in academia recently, it is the first to prove the effect on the skin and the possibility of using a disinfectant.

The joint research team analyzed cytotoxicity to analyze the effect on skin cells when radical water is used as a skin disinfectant, and as a result, it was confirmed that there is no toxicity to normal skin cells. In addition, it has been verified that not only the sterilization and antibacterial effects of radical water are excellent, but that the effect lasts for more than 7 months. In an experiment to confirm its usefulness against the COVID-19 virus, it was able to prove the antiviral effect and found the possibility of replacing the existing disinfectant.

Nuclear Fusion, which has a source technology for generating radical water using atmospheric pressure plasma, signed a technology transfer agreement with ICDC and Plarit in 2021. Since then, we have developed a technology that can mass-produce radical water that is safe and optimized for sterilization and antibacterial efficacy through cooperation with ICD. Thus, the results of this study were obtained.

“Plasma technology, which is being applied to high-tech industries, finds new possibilities in the transmission and infection prevention market, raising expectations for plasma-bio fusion technology,” said Yoo Seok-jae, president of the Nuclear Fusion Research Institute. We will continue to strive to contribute to improving the quality of life of the people by applying various plasma technologies that we have in the bio industry.”

The results of this study were published in 'Scientific Report, year impact factor: 4.379,' a sister journal of the world-renowned academic journal Nature on April 8th. Based on the results of this research, the joint research team with the Nuclear Fusion Research Institute is conducting clinical trials to develop quasi-drugs, such as anti-inflammatory drugs using radical water, in addition to skin disinfectants.
