Haenam Sweet Potatoes to be Cultivated as a Regionally Specialized Cluster

Haenam-gun to create a rural convergence industrial zone by 2024

(Haenam = Break News) Reporter Hak-soo Lee = Haenam sweet potato, with national recognition, will be nurtured as a regional-specialized cluster linked with front and rear industries.

Haenam-gun was selected for a contest to create a rural convergence industrial zone organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to create a regional specialized industrial cluster in which primary, secondary, and tertiary industries such as sweet potato production, manufacturing and processing, and experience and tourism are convergence.

This project will invest 3 billion won by 2024 to support the establishment of low-temperature storage and processing facilities for sweet potatoes, joint brand development, product marketing, and development of experience/tourism programs.

Haenam is the largest sweet potato main production complex producing 34,000 tons of sweet potatoes per year on 600 farms and 1,964 hectares of cultivation area, accounting for 56% of the cultivated area in Jeollanam-do. The sales of manufacturing and processing companies that produce dried sweet potato and sweet potato bread are also growing steadily, reaching 15.5 billion won annually.

Haenam sweet potato, grown in the loess soil containing a large amount of germanium, in the wind, has a high sugar content and a lot of dietary fiber and minerals.

However, due to a decrease in prices due to concentrated shipments at a specific time, expansion of areas for growing sweet potatoes, and lack of differentiation due to duplication of processed items, it is emerging as a task to find a new development direction to protect the status of luxury sweet potatoes.

Through this cluster creation project, it is planned to expand the low-temperature storage facility for sweet potatoes in Bangchuk-ri, Hwasan-myeon, the main production area of sweet potatoes, and to improve the distribution infrastructure in the production area to adjust the shipping time and build processing facilities to produce semi-processed products.

In particular, it is expected to create new added value by processing giant sweet potatoes, which have a lower price and preference compared to special products, into sweet potato cubes, etc. and supplying them to food companies.

At the same time, the software sector will be expanded to strengthen the capabilities of local processing companies, develop products, and develop experiential programs. It plans to target consumers by developing differentiated new products through market research, and will actively support various promotions and home shopping sales to promote new product sales.

It plans to operate a variety of programs related to sweet potatoes that can attract staying-type tourists, breaking away from the existing experiential activities focused on digging sweet potatoes.

Mayor Myung Hyeon-gwan said, “It will be an opportunity for the Haenam sweet potato industry to take off again by improving the primary, secondary, and tertiary industrial infrastructure through the rural convergence industrial district development project that uses sweet potatoes as an item. We will spare no effort to support our position,” he said.
