Power supply 'red light' in the worst heat wave since 2018... KEPCO takes emergency measures
-Reporter Moon Hong-cheol

Electricity use is expected to increase this year compared to 2018, which recorded the worst heatwave in history. As a result, concerns about power shortages are also growing.

According to the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) on the 23rd, electricity consumption from January to July this year was expected to be 305,416 GWh, 3.8% higher than last year's 294,320 GWh.

In particular, KEPCO estimated that this year's power demand peak period (the 2nd week of August) will have a power supply capacity of 99,174 MW. This is an increase of 1223 MW compared to last year.

However, it is expected that cooling demand will increase from the lowest of 338MW to the highest of 3838MW from 2018, which was the worst heat wave in history due to the heat wave this summer. Electricity consumption is also expected to increase due to the strong export performance of industries that consume electricity such as semiconductors, automobiles, and mechanical equipment following the economic recovery.

In other words, the power reserve ratio is expected to decrease due to the increase in cooling demand due to the heat wave and the increase in industrial production due to the economic recovery.

Accordingly, KEPCO has been operating the power supply and demand countermeasure situation room at the headquarters and 15 regional headquarters from the 5th, and has an emergency response system in preparation for emergency situations that may occur at 244 business sites nationwide. We maintain close cooperation in case of emergency.

In preparation for an emergency power supply and demand emergency, we signed an emergency power saving demand adjustment agreement with 159 customers to secure 885 MW of demand resources, and effectively cooperate with 11,67 large-capacity customers with contract power of 3000 kW or more, which accounts for about 50% of electricity sales. By establishing a system, it is promoting the sharing of power supply and demand and power saving guidance at peak times.

In addition, all preparations have been made, such as pre-inspection and replacement of power facilities in areas where power use is expected to increase rapidly, resolving overload in the power system, and checking the diagnosis and prompt recovery support system to prevent power outages in apartment houses (apartments).

Electricity facilities were specially inspected at 239,124 vulnerable places such as river banks and flooded areas, and 2,289 water intake facilities such as rainwater pumping stations and drainage stations, and about 3,000 transformers expected to be overloaded were also replaced.

Meanwhile, KEPCO also conducted an 'Emergency Power Supply and Demand Emergency Training' to perform tasks assigned to each emergency stage in case of a situation at the head office's disaster control room in Naju, Jeollanam-do, on the 21st in order to strengthen the ability to respond to emergency situations of power supply and demand in the summer. .

The drill was conducted in stages of interest, caution, vigilance, and seriousness depending on the level of reserve, assuming a situation in which the reserve power is rapidly reduced due to an unexpected failure of the generator in a situation where the demand for electricity is rapidly increasing due to abnormal high temperature. When each step was issued, measures such as remote control of air conditioners and requests for closed caption broadcasting were actually implemented, and training was also conducted to reduce the voltage of the transformer and cut off the load.

Jeong Seung-il, president of KEPCO, urged employees to “do our best to provide stable power by conducting additional safety inspections and management of major facilities to avoid disruptions in power supply and demand, and thoroughly training measures for each emergency stage.”
