Peace Museum <Colorless Society; Ministry of Central Information 60> Exhibition held

An exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Central Intelligence Agency... A project to compile the <Anti-Constitutional Violators' Violence> is also in progress.

-Reporter Park Jeong-dae

The Peace Museum is dedicated to <Colorless Society; The Central Intelligence Agency is holding an exhibition. The article below is based on the press release of the Peace Museum.

The Central Intelligence Agency, established at the same time as the 5.16 military uprising in 196, was a key institution that supported the military dictatorship by exercising extrajudicial power based on the National Security Act. <Colorless Society; The Colorless Society; The Central Intelligence Agency 60> has a special meaning. This is because the Central Intelligence Agency, which has inflicted indelible wounds on the victims as well as on the entire Korean society, is the subject of the National Security Act, which has been censoring and suppressing artistic expression in the name of ‘transferential expression’.

<Colorless Society; Central Intelligence Agency 60> still pays attention to the violence of information and control that permeates our daily lives. In addition to the works of eight artists, including Wonhee Roh, Yongju Kwon, Sanghee Song (art), and Youngshin Ma (manga), materials related to the National Security Act are also on display. The archive exhibition includes materials such as the <Investigation on the Violence of State Violence and Torture Violations>, which was studied at the Peace Museum, and the opinion of Kim Seung-hyo, the main character of the movie <Confession>, on violation of the National Security Act.

The Peace Museum has held a total of four relay exhibitions with the <Hello, National Security Act> exhibition (2006), and carried out the National Violence Video Recording Project (2017). In addition, he has been engaged in continuous activities such as a photo exhibition for healing victims of state violence and the operation of a photo healing program for victims of state violence (2016-2017). Space99 will continue to pursue this ‘aesthetic of liberation and restoration’ through its own exhibition programs and education.

2021 is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Central Intelligence Agency. It is not easy for people today to suddenly think of 1961 in their minds. The past and future are far from imagining for those who have been running with compression and efficiency with their smartphones. The facts about the state power in the past have now been made into films such as <1987>, <The Managers of Namsan>, and <The Man at that time>, and remain as a 'story of the past in the media'.

The circumstances and results of history are always revealed in concreteness. The indescribable suffering of people, who held hands with whom, who made the situation worse by what decision, is experienced in this concreteness. This exhibition <Colorless Society; Central Intelligence Agency 60> attempts to examine the history of information controlled and monitored by a national institution called the Central Intelligence Agency, the influence it had on society as a whole by colluding with the dictatorship, and furthermore, the links that still remain in our daily lives.

It is no exaggeration to say that the heads of the Central Intelligence Agency have all become the core of national power, and the connected organization still dominates the ironic political and social economy of the present through generational change. In the past, the intelligence service structured power through the control and monitoring of information, but today it is rather difficult to get close to the facts due to the plethora of information and confusion. For example, surveillance and control, combined with media technology, face other risks such as random information collection and personal information leakage, and numerous fake news and media duplication make it impossible to believe anything in everyday life.

The way in which Korean society remembers major architectures, places, events, and people has always been cut off, remodeled, or redeveloped as a memorial to erase and remove, and in that sense it is flat. The artists participating in the exhibition will present three-dimensional works in a way that tells the story of an event and is socially commemorated and remembered. Stories of pain and wounds in society must be continuously told. This is because it is a reflection, awareness, and reflection on our past. This exhibition will start by noticing what kind of present lies before us from the numerous events and stories woven through the Central Intelligence Agency. The story that when information collides with capital or power, we live in a controlled society without our knowledge, makes us look back on the present reality. Maybe our daily life is getting closer to science fiction.

We are…

2012, Styrofoam sculpture, Water-based paint for exterior, colored styrofoam,

W140×H105×D35cm

The phrase ‘We work in the dark and aim for the sun’ written in this work was a sub-command of the Central Intelligence Agency in the past. 'We...', one of Kwon Yong-ju's cover stone series, humorously reveals the fiction of the slogans that the artist was interested in through the light weight of fake stones. The author discovered that the conservative regime that created the Central Intelligence Agency rather revealed negative aspects of Wonhoon, such as 'shadow', 'ignorance', and 'silence'.

The Beginning of Words

2015, Acrylic and Oil on Canvas 162×130cm

Haunted Stage

2017, Oil on Canvas 130×162cm

<The Haunting Stage> is a painting that reminds me of a theater stage where the substance is gone and only the skin remains. The theater stage, which is the background in the picture, remains flat, and huge suits without people fill the stage. Among those suits, we catch a glimpse of Park Jung-hee, who is like a ghost, in the dark. What kind of sound can we imagine about power on a theatrical stage where the sound seems to have been removed? In <The Beginning of Words>, we can witness the blank frames erased in white. This empty frame often appears in other works as well. It is a space of silence, which makes you question what lies beneath that silence. In the paintings, we meet the pain of individuals in the violent reality through the emotions and memories that the artist drew.

no matter how much you talk

2020, cartoon, variable installation

This work is a reconstructed exhibition of Ma Young-shin's book, No matter how much you talk about it (the democratization movement viewed as a cartoon). It entails a tremendous amount of energy to recollect the unexperienced past events and portray the situation in detail. This is especially true in situations of state violence, such as the 5.18 Democratization Movement. Looking at this book, it feels as if the author was there as a part of the past of people who died for no reason. Also, from the expressions and lines of the people drawn by the artist, we can see under what circumstances ordinary citizens were subjected to unreasonable violence. Talk about 5.18, which is not enough no matter how much you talk, to those who don't listen no matter how much you cry

Anyang, at the Dawn of The Day: The city Dreaming of a Utopia

2014, Single-channel video Installation

The National Theater

2004, Single-channel video Installation

In <National Theater>, the sniper scene of Yuk Young-soo is repeatedly reproduced. Through this video work, the artist raises questions about the idealized woman's life, and at the same time shows an empty gesture for the trauma of the past that does not die and constantly occupies the present.

<Anyang, People Who Dream of Utopia at the Dawn of That Day> contains every nook and cranny of Anyang City that the artist has filmed. Anyang 安養 is a kind of utopia, meaning a world free from suffering and extremely comfortable and free. In the landscape of the city revealed at dawn, the artist senses the other side of the city hidden under plain pavement. The artist shows the bare face of the city's system through images of institutional facilities such as police stations, schools, stadiums, and post offices. In addition, a sci-fi world that thoroughly classifies and censors humans by citing books such as Yunseong Moon’s 『Perfect Society』 (1967), Aldous Huxley's 『Brave New World』 (1932), and George Orwell's 『1984』 (1949). It sensitively captures moments that overlap with ordinary cities like Anyang. In the black system, the individual's private life disappears and the artist raises a question that it may be being manipulated by a huge project. Not in the future, not in a novel, right now, right here.

  ▲Pyeongju Seo

palace of memories

2021, single channel video, variable installation

Information is distorted, added, modified, or deleted over time. So are the experiences of violence. With sci-fi stories, the artist composes a montage of memories of various forms of institutional violence such as schools, military, and the state, emphasizing insufficient memories, misleading or unreproducible information.

Hitting the Wall

2019, single channel video installation,

Single-channel video installation

Myeong-Woo Jung's wall hitting video begins with the question of why we should remember the past we do not experience. This work, created with the tennis courts of the Namyeong-dong Grand Public Office in mind, expresses the weight of violence and the powerlessness of the dark past. So, the act of hitting the wall is an effort and training to shake off such helplessness. This training is to prevent the past of state violence from becoming a reality, and to fight when the past becomes the present. The artist constantly hits a tennis ball against the wall and asks us why there is a tennis court in the Namyeong-dong Grand Public Office and why the movement called tennis has spread.

Namyeong-dong anti-aircraft room

2021, pigment print, photo installation

These photos were taken for the record of the anti-communist room in Namyeong-dong.

The artist, who is a generation after the democratization period, said that when he encountered this space, he did not feel the real fear and was insensitive. Rather, the artist focuses on the sophistication of this empty building itself, with no torture, no perpetrators, and no police. Discover the perfection of a building that formatively embodies the movement and structure according to the purpose. The back door of the building where the performers enter, the spiral staircase that makes it impossible to be conscious of the number of floors, the misaligned entrances to the rooms facing the hallway, the extremely narrow window that allows only a little light, the lighting device, the location of the table, etc. Mindfulness is the other face of violence. This Namyeong-dong Anti-Government Office was designed by architect Kim Su-geun.

 ▲The Tin Drummer

Myanmar’s Nway-Oo Galaxy

2021, variable installation, 25 stickers, each diameter 5cm

The Tin Drummer is an artist group formed in the context of a military coup in Myanmar in 2021. The Peace Museum invited The Tin Drummer to this exhibition for solidarity and support for state violence. The Tin Drummer makes stickers to commemorate those who lost their lives resisting the coup and reminds them of what their lives mean. The previous exhibition will consist of stickers of 25 people, but other locations will be filled with more martyrs. Artists are joining this struggle by making a statement that they will not cooperate with the military government in the context of a military dictatorship coup. The commemorative method of spreading the message using figures that symbolize the universe and stars continues.
