Presidential contender Chung Sye-kyun, former prime minister, 'expects a bold recovery as the sun rises'

“I hope that all the people who are exhausted from Corona 19 will be able to gain courage once again with him.”

The Old Man and the Sea was published in 1952, when Hemingway was 53, and received huge acclaim, and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Despite these favorable reviews, the story of <The Old Man and the Sea> is simpler than expected. Why did Hemingway's last published work in his life acclaimed and touched the hearts of many? This is because it gives the reader a great realization with the vividness of fighting with the main character in the middle of the sea.

Santiago caught no fish on his 84th day. A boy named Manolin, who was with them until the 40th, was forced to go to another boat by his parents. Manolin, who can't forget Santiago, comes back to serve coffee and gives courage. The old man was determined to go out to sea and said, 'I will be careful. Fortune always comes to those who are prepared.” The old man regained his strength and went out alone to the distant sea, and a huge fish caught on a hook with a herring bait provided by the boy. Depending on the movement of the fish, the boat may overturn or the old man holding the fishing line may fall into the sea. The old man uses all the knowledge he has learned in the sea to carefully observe the direction of the wind, the depth of the sea, and the movement of the fish, then catches the fish with a harpoon. He tied a large fish to a boat and was attacked by sharks several times on his way back to port. When the sharks keep following them, the old man says, 'Man was not made to be defeated. A man can be destroyed, but he cannot be defeated,' he encourages himself. Each time, the old man does his best to defeat the shark, but when he arrives at the port, the big fish is a bare bone. The old man, who possesses a deep understanding of the sea and a spirit that does not yield to any difficulties, says that the sea is “a place where our friends and enemies are.”

Most of the novel is about an old man alone on a deck, facing ever-changing situations. It is difficult to keep a single injured and exhausted body in the open sea, but if you face death while fighting fish, you will feel lonely and afraid. Will I be able to overcome it? How did the old man get over it?

The greatest strength of the old man lies in his knowledge of the sea. He can read the sea just by the sound of the wind and the height of the waves. He enjoys the sea, overcomes loneliness, and overcomes fear by analyzing the sea. It would be good to follow the life of an elderly person and think about what I need to prepare in my life to get through the long road of life.

The world we live in today is like the sea of old people. After Corona, the international situation and the politics, economy, and society of Korean society in general are at risk on the turbulent waves. After the battle, the whole body is full and calm for a while, and in the middle of the vast ocean, you have to prepare for war again. Who are you fighting for and what do you want to gain? This world has friends and enemies.

Isn't Santiago now giving us wisdom to overcome the 'world with friends and enemies'? Who is Santiago now as he heads back to the dark waters in search of big fish to regain his confidence?

I assert that the Santiago of this era is Jeong Se-kyun. Santiago's appearance overlaps with Santiago, who has shown strong conviction and will for his life, especially politics. His greatest strength lies in his knowledge of the country and its people, who stir up politics, economy, and society in general. Just as you can read the sea just by the sound of the wind and the height of the waves, you overcome loneliness by having fun with the people and overcoming fear by analyzing the situation.

Now, to create the mundos he dreamed of as a boy Manolin, he becomes Santiago himself and speaks with a stronger yet firm figure than anyone else. “Man can be destroyed, but not defeated.” Santiago's will to win an arm wrestling against a black man in a pub in Casablanca when he was young is the same. Whenever he encounters a difficult situation, he remembers the great DiMaggio Kim Dae-jung and strengthens his will to overcome it. He is determined to overcome difficulties with a confident yet fierce struggle.

Ambos Mundos Hotel (Cuba: where Hemingway stayed for 7 years and wrote 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' etc.) invite to I hope that all the people who are exhausted from Corona 19 can once again gain courage with him.

“As the Sun Rises --- Hemingway / The Old Man and the Sea

The sun turns into the setting sun in the evening

I lose to the dyed horizon

When the morning comes, I wake up again

The sun never darkens this world

don't let it dominate

As long as the sun is there, you don't have to despair

Because hope is the sun.” kim2385@nate.com
