Korea's national default risk is the lowest since 2008... the lowest among emerging countries
-Reporter Moon Hong-cheol

It was found that Korea's national bankruptcy risk reached the lowest level since the 2008 global financial crisis.

According to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance on the 6th, in 2008, the CDS (Credit Default Swap) premium for Korean government bonds (based on 5-year external bonds) recorded 19bp (1bp=0.01%p) on the 5th of this month (based on New York Market). It has hit the lowest level since the global financial crisis.

The CDS premium is a fee paid by the bondholder to the principal insurer in exchange for guaranteeing the collection of principal in case of default, and is a kind of insurance premium against the risk of default.

In other words, the lower the CDS premium, the lower the credit risk of the bond issuer, so it is commonly used as one of the representative indicators of the bond issuer's creditworthiness.

Korea's CDS premium has continued to improve since the second half of 2017, and then rose to 57bp (March 23, 2020) at the beginning of last year's pandemic, but has stabilized rapidly since.

Currently, Korea's CDS premium ranks 17th among countries in the world, the lowest among emerging countries. Compared to major developed countries, it is lower than that of France (23bp) and similar to that of Canada (18bp).

The government evaluated the new minimum as a result of highlighting the recent strengths of the Korean economy and the positive views of overseas investors, amid favorable external conditions, such as the improvement of the global financial market.

In recent years, global financial markets are creating favorable conditions for investment in emerging markets, including Korea, as concerns over US inflation and rising government bond rates have eased and risk preferences have been restored.

In particular, Korea is showing a differentiation from other countries, such as relatively small economic damage from Corona 19 and a recent rapid economic recovery.

Last year, Korea's growth rate was 1.0%, ranking 3rd among the G20 countries.

In addition, Korea's first quarter of this year's GDP (breaking report) grew by 1.6% compared to the previous year, significantly exceeding the market forecast, and it recovered to the pre-crisis level (April 4, 2019) one quarter ahead of the original estimate.

In the case of national credit ratings, the ratings or outlooks of 113 countries have been downgraded since last year in the midst of a pandemic, but Korea is maintaining the highest level in history.

The government plans to make more efforts to operate internal and external economic policies so that such positive results can lead to a fast and strong recovery of the Korean economy and continuous stability of the financial market.

The plan is to closely monitor external risk factors such as Corona 19, US inflation, and geopolitical tensions, and to manage external credibility, such as close communication with international credit rating agencies and foreign investors.
