Conglomerates, 33 trillion won in overseas sales last year in the aftermath of Corona 19↓
-Reporter Moon Hong-cheol

It was found that last year's overseas sales of large domestic companies decreased by more than 33 trillion won from the previous year.

It is interpreted that the operation of the factory and receipt of orders were disrupted in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). In particular, the analysis is attributed to the significant decrease in sales of intermediate goods exported to Asia, a major production base.

By industry, overseas sales declined remarkably, centering on “mid-to-long” industries such as automobiles and parts, and petrochemicals. On the other hand, six industries, including IT, electric and electronic, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals, showed an increase in overseas sales and rather received Corona 19 benefits.

According to the CEO Score on the 28th, a survey of 230 companies that disclosed their sales by region among the 500 largest domestic companies showed that their overseas sales last year reached 804 trillion 883 billion won, a decrease of 33.37 trillion won (-4%) from the previous year.

Considering that the total sales of 230 companies including domestic sales (1762,931.5 billion won) decreased by 83,5581 billion won compared to the previous year, 45.6% of the decrease in sales was affected by the decrease in overseas sales. Overseas sales accounted for 45.6% of total sales, down from 45.4% in 2019 and 0.2%p.

By industry, sales of trading companies, automobiles and parts, and petrochemicals fell markedly. Overseas sales of trading companies decreased by 16,523.5 billion won compared to the previous year, the largest decrease.Automotive and parts (-10,3507 billion), petrochemical (-6,352.6 billion), construction and construction materials (-4,500,5 billion), Overseas sales of steel (-3,5578 billion won), shipbuilding, machinery and equipment (-3,921 trillion won), and securities (-1,435 billion won) declined by more than 1 trillion won.

In the case of trading companies, auto parts, and construction and construction materials, sales declined in all overseas markets such as the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Petrochemical sales increased in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and steel sales in the Middle East and Africa, but sluggish in the rest of the region, leading to a decrease in overall sales.

On the other hand, it was found that six industries, including IT, electric and electronic, were not affected by Corona 19, as overseas sales increased year-on-year. Overseas sales of IT electrical and electronics increased by 11,6606 billion won compared to the previous year, the largest increase. In addition, overseas sales also increased in food and beverage (2,276.9 billion won), pharmaceuticals (705.8 billion won↑), services (43.7 billion won↑), insurance (25 billion won↑), and telecommunications (4.8 billion won↑).

For IT Electric and Electronics, sales in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa decreased by 4.4% and 3.1%, respectively, compared to the previous year, but overall overseas sales increased by increasing sales by 11.8% in the Americas and 8.3% in Europe.

Food and beverage sales rose 16.4% and 18.6% in the Americas and Europe, respectively. For pharmaceuticals, sales in Europe decreased (-17.5%), but overseas sales increased significantly as sales in the Americas (167.6%↑) and Asia (9.8%↑) increased significantly. Services recovered from sluggishness in Asia (-6.3%) and the Middle East and Africa (-75.7%) in the Americas (7.8%↑) and Europe (4.7%↑).

Looking at overseas sales by continent, sales in all regions except the Americas decreased. The Middle East and Africa decreased by 32.8% (-4,156 billion won), Asia by 8.8% (-31,996 billion won), and Europe by 2.3% (-3,4063 trillion won), respectively.

In the case of the Middle East and Africa, where the decline rate is the most, it is analyzed that the decrease in the order volume of construction companies that entered the region due to the fall in oil prices and Corona 19 last year was largely affected.

As for the proportion of overseas sales by continent, Asia ranked first at 21.9% from the previous year, but the proportion decreased by 0.8%p. The proportions of the Americas and Europe were 16.7% and 9.4%, respectively, increasing 1.5%p and 0.3%p from the previous year, narrowing the gap with Asia. The share of Middle East and Africa was 0.6%, down 0.2%p from the previous year.

By company, the place where overseas sales declined the most was SK Trading International. SK Trading International posted 32.6 trillion won in sales overseas in 2019, but last year, due to sluggish exports of refinery chemicals, it was only 19.23 trillion won, a decrease in sales of 12,8285 billion won (-40%) compared to the previous year.

Among the 2nd to 5th places in the top 2nd to 5th place in overseas sales, S-Oil (-4,4275 billion won), Hyundai Motors (-4,165.3 billion won), Hyundai Mobis (-2,731.9 billion won), POSCO (-2,489.7 billion won), etc. Industry companies are listed. Except for Hyundai Motor's sales increase of 1.8% in the Americas, all of these five companies saw their sales in the Americas, Europe, and Asia decline.

The company with the largest increase in overseas sales was SK Hynix. It increased by 4,904.7 billion won from 25,543.7 billion won in 2019 to 30,4484 billion won last year. Samsung Electronics (3,551.1 billion won↑), LG International (1,7023 billion won↑), LG Chem (1,4154 billion won↑), and Samsung SDI (1,406.4 billion won↑) were also included in the top five of the overseas sales growth.

In the case of SK Hynix, sales in Asia only increased slightly, but sales in the Americas and Europe increased by 55.8% and 12.5%, respectively, and overall overseas sales increased. Samsung Electronics also saw its Asian sales decline by 5.2%, but its sales in the Americas and Europe increased 6% and 7.6%, respectively, leading the overall overseas sales.

Last year, 11 places that accounted for more than 90% of overseas sales in total sales including domestic sales were counted. The largest share of overseas sales is Celltrion Healthcare, which posted 99.8% of total sales of 1.627.6 billion won, or 1.624.8 billion won, from overseas.

LS I&D followed with 99.3%, followed by Hanse Industries (98.4%), Hwaseung Industries (97.9%), Samsung Display (96.7%), and LG Display (96.3%).
