【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=최근 중국 탄산 리튬 현물 가격이 2배 이상으로 급등함에 따라 지난 2018년 포스코가 인수한 아르헨티나 ‘옴브레 무에르토(Hombre Muerto)’ 염호에 매장되어 있는 리튬의 누적 매출액이 현 시세 적용할 경우, 35조원에 달할 것으로 전망된다고 포스코가 3일 밝혔다.

포스코는 "지난해 말 업계 최고 수준의 글로벌 염수리튬 전문 컨설팅 업체인 미국의 몽고메리社(Montgomery & Associates)사는염호의 리튬 매장량이 인수 당시 추정220만톤 보다 6배 늘어난 1,350만톤임을 확인했다. "며 "현재 중국을 포함해 전 세계적으로 전기차 시장이 성장하고 있어 전기차 배터리의 필수 소재인 리튬 가격은 계속해서 상승할 것으로 전망된다"고 덧붙였다.

이와 함께 현재 전량 중국에 의존하고 있는 음극재 원료인 흑연의 수급 다변화를 위해 아프리카 탄자니아 흑연광산을 보유한 호주 광산업체 블랙록마이닝 지분 15%를 지난달 인수 완료했다.
한편 2030년까지 포스코는 이차전지소재의 원료인 리튬, 니켈, 흑연 등의 자체 공급체계를 만들고, 포스코케미칼은 이를 원료로 양극재 40만 톤, 음극재 26만 톤 생산체제를 구축할 계획이다. 이를 통해 포스코그룹은 전 세계에서 유일하게 원료에서부터 이차전지소재까지 생산하는 소재 밸류체인을 완성한다는 계획이다.
