What is the problem with chronic fatigue?

¡¼Korea Health Management Association Daegu Branch ¡½Professor Eon-Sook Lee, Inje University = If symptoms persist, become indifferent to other things, you should be suspicious of chronic fatigue. What is the cause of chronic fatigue in modern people and how to solve it?

¡Þ What is fatigue?

Fatigue is a common symptom in everyday life, and most of them are improved by rest, but problems arise when it is not.

Fatigue is a condition that is physically or mentally exhausted or weakened by various causes. Regardless of the cause, when the symptoms of fatigue persist for more than 6 months or repeat, it is called ¡®chronic fatigue.¡¯ Often, when you are tired, you are weak, easily exhausted, weakened, and indifferent to other things.

When fatigue persists, you must first check whether there is any cause of constant fatigue in your daily life, and the most common cause is when excessive work continues. At this time, if the overwork persists for several days, it does not recover with 1-2 days of rest, and several days of rest may be required. Irregular lifestyle habits can be a problem, but sleeping time is not constant. At this time, it is helpful to set a time to wake up regardless of the time you start to fall asleep and practice it. In addition, a sudden increase in weight also complains of fatigue. When fatigue does not improve even at rest, it is necessary to determine what causes fatigue.

¡Þ What causes fatigue?

Many people who complain of fatigue and visit the hospital have sleep problems and depression. There are various sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy, and because the person does not recognize his symptoms well, he visits the hospital with persistent fatigue. A quick diagnosis can be made by visiting the hospital with a family who knows your sleeping status well. In addition, even if there is no disease, an evaluation of sleep disorders may be necessary because an incorrect sleep pattern can cause fatigue. Depression is a relatively common disease (prevalence of 4.4%, 015 WHO reports) and is a common cause of fatigue. At this time, various symptoms such as decreased appetite and weight loss, insomnia, decreased motivation, depression, and feelings of self-result may be accompanied, but since the spectrum of symptoms is wide, consultation with a medical professional is necessary.

Fatigue is also accompanied by other symptoms, and there are many cases of diseases that cause fatigue. For example, if you have fever, cough, shortness of breath, weight loss, headache, etc., you are more likely to have a disease. Therefore, it is necessary to find the cause of fatigue through appropriate tests along with consultation with a medical professional. In addition, because fatigue can be caused by depression, anxiety, or emotional stress, evaluation of emotional disorders may also be necessary. Since various diseases can be the cause of chronic fatigue, you should avoid self-diagnosing one's own fatigue and determining the cause of fatigue. It is important.

One of the diseases that cause chronic fatigue is chronic fatigue syndrome. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a disease for which the diagnostic criteria were established in 1994, and various symptoms such as sore throat, muscle pain, and concentration disorder occur along with unexplained chronic fatigue. Chronic fatigue syndrome has many similar diseases such as fibromyalgia syndrome, does not recover easily, and requires specialized treatment, so it is recommended to consult a medical professional.

¡Þ What are the measures to solve fatigue?

In contrast, the most effective treatment for chronic fatigue is to receive specialized treatment for each diagnosed disease. However, in case of chronic fatigue irrelevant to the disease, it is important to correct lifestyle habits appropriately to prevent fatigue in daily life. The most important way to recover from fatigue is rest. However, there are times when you don't take a break in an appropriate way, for example going on a trip to relax. Adapting to a new environment can hinder proper rest, especially when physical fatigue is high, and travel is an unsuitable way to rest. The general fatigue prevention method is as follows.

¨ç Do regular exercise more than 3 times a week, at least 30 minutes.

¨è Quit smoking.

¨é Reduce alcohol consumption. (The average amount of alcohol consumed per day is 2 or less for men and 1 or less for women)

¨ê Reduce caffeine (coffee, etc.) intake as much as possible.

¨ë Maintain an appropriate weight.

¨ì Get enough sleep.

¨í Eat a balanced diet (avoid overeating and consume enough vitamins and minerals)

¨î Take adequate rest by controlling your usual workload and planning an efficient time.

¨ï Learn to cope with positive stress.

-Easy daily relaxation exercises and deep breathing techniques

-Associative training based on positive experiences

-Talk with friends and family and ask for help when difficult things arise

¨ð Avoid the use of habit-forming drugs (pain relievers, stabilizers, drugs, etc.).

In the case of chronic fatigue syndrome, treatment is often not easy. Among the treatments for chronic fatigue syndrome, various methods have been tried, but some treatments known to be effective include progressive low-intensity exercise. It's a good idea to consult a professional and try the treatment that works best for you.
