The first heart to meet the light of the original-painting

-Kim Yong-gil novelist

Black dot-the coolest of my consciousness

One black dot walks. He seems to be a person from walking on two legs. The background of the black dots is all white. The place where the black dot was walking was on the white paper. It is the person in the picture I drew when I was seven. Looking down from the top of a tall building, people are nothing more than black spots like ants. The black dot has a soul, has a name, and has a face. Street trees were drawn, and vanishing points were also created.

When I was seven I knew how to draw a person with black dots. When I drew such a picture, people were startled. How did I come to paint such a picture? Is it because I am a prodigy? no. There is a story there. It was the work of my parents.

When my parents were seven, they sent me to an art academy instead of kindergarten. Did my parents discover a tremendous talent for me and made that decision? The fact is that I paid less money to art academies than kindergarten. Rather, it may be because the art academy was in front of the house.

At that time, our house was in the outskirts of Seoul, and there was an art academy right in front of the house. The art academy I attended was not a place that was officially licensed, but a small studio where a bachelor teacher, an art student, gathered and taught a few children. Right now, the teacher's name is ambiguous and I only remember the last name of Park.

Anyway, at the age of seven, I learned from Mr. Park how to draw people with black dots. The teacher was an unemployed soldier, and outside of the time to teach the children, he was hung up on drawing works to be submitted to places such as the National Exhibition. The unique smell of oil and sticky textures, the palette of all kinds of colors, and the scenery of the Japanese studio, where the canvases are painted many times thick with paints, are still eye-catching.

I drew surprisingly hard and followed the teacher well. While holding a sketchbook and drawing the landscape on an autumn road where leaves are falling, I learned about vanishing points and how to draw people with black dots. In winter, I went to my teacher's friend's flower garden and painted various plants. The flower garden was a green house built in the middle of a field. It was a rare green house at the time, so the green house flower garden was like Shincheonji to me. On a snowy day, I remember eating baked sweet potatoes on the stove in the middle of a flower garden even now, more than 50 years later.

Park also gave us a lot of interesting stories. I learned to paint while listening to the stories of painters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael who led the Renaissance, and the stories of Manet, Monet, Cezanne and Gogh. When I entered elementary school, I surprised the teachers by reciting the names and works of these artists.

Even after entering elementary school, I went to learn painting for a few more months, but my painting class ended there because the teacher moved away. At that time, when I broke up with the teacher, he said, "You have the skill of drawing, so try hard and become a great painter like Leonardo da Vinci in the future."

But my painting class ended there. Of course, while I was in school, I was screaming at places like teacher contests and the prizes were pretty good, but I gradually moved away from painting and didn't even major in art.

It may be because of a friend named “Shin Seong-gyun” I met in elementary school. Because he had an excellent skill in painting, he was chosen as a best friend in a drawing contest with me, but one day he said this.

“Yong-gil, let’s not draw in front of us.”

"Why?"

“No matter how well you draw, you cannot win the Nobel Prize. There is a Nobel Prize for Literature, but no Nobel Prize for Art. I'm going to do literature.”

This was the word from the mouth of a second grader in elementary school. When I say this in the future, people make a disbelieving expression. But when I heard that, I was deeply shocked. I didn't know what literature was, and I fell into the question of'How do I give up on drawing?'

However, the worries soon became a luxury. My father's business collapsed, so my house had to move to a farther outskirts, and because of my transfer, I broke up with Sung-gyun, and I, who couldn't afford even paints, naturally moved away from painting.

When I was in the 5th grade, winning the first prize at the school's Baekiljang, I began to turn to literature. It was crucial that Kim Min-seok, the homeroom teacher, said, "I hope you will become a novelist in the future."

As I grew up, I fell into the fever of literature, and paintings were drawn only in my mind. Eventually, I became a person who writes poetry and novels, but sometimes my longing and aspiration for paintings stir me up.

Recently, as I traveled from place to place and took pictures of landscapes with digital cameras, I fell into nostalgia for more beautiful landscapes and paintings. I opened the sketchbook several times and listened to the brush, but my skills were not beyond the level of elementary school students. I thought about learning the painting again, but I decided to try something else.

Let's unite art and literature together! Let's write <Novel Western Art History> or <Art World History>!

Suddenly, such an idea came up. Instead of learning painting as a craftsman, I thought that I would like to trace the paintings and lives of world-class painters and shape them into a single literature.

You may hear that the idea is too grand, but I am determined to be able to make it, and I think this article will be about the beginning of the work.

So, as I followed the first encounter between me and the painting, I met a black dot. The black dot has a soul, has a name, and has a face.

The black dot became the beginning of my consciousness as well as my painting.

Mankind's First Picture-Cave Murals

People say that drawing is difficult. It's easy to understand if it's a picture of an ordinary landscape or a person, but when you encounter an abstract and symbolic picture, the general public leans your head. Most modern paintings are difficult. Why do painters paint difficult pictures? What kind of great philosophy do they confuse people with a dismal picture? Why on earth do you need such a picture? In fact, it is true that many people ignore the paintings of modern painters.

However, the first picture drawn by mankind is not difficult at all. Not only is it not difficult, it is also very mysterious and fun. You may already know the murals in Altamira Caves or Lasko Caves. Those paintings are the first human paintings.

If the dark spot was the origin of my consciousness, it could be said that the origin of mankind's first consciousness was a cave painting. Some might say how cave paintings are the origin of humanity's first consciousness. The ancients may have spoken, sang, or danced before painting. However, the songs sung by the ancients flew into the sky, and when they scream, the shouts and conversations and their dances disappear, and only cave paintings remain. The paintings remain, telling their lives, the origin of humanity.

In the history of mankind, paintings precede letters regardless of region. Before the creation of letters, pictures may have taken over the role of letters to some extent. If you learn a little deeper about cave paintings, you will deepen your understanding of the world of consciousness of the ancients and will give you a fundamental perspective on art. Let's enter the world of cave paintings.

The first cave paintings were discovered in 1897. Marquis of Shoutola, an amateur archaeologist, accidentally discovered the Altamira cave paintings thanks to her young daughter.

“Dad, bull! There is a bull on the ceiling.”

At the moment, the eyes of the marquis widened. There was a yellow bison in a majestic and overwhelming appearance that would dazzle the eyes. The cow, with its shoulders inflated and angry, was drawn so realistically that it seemed to breathe alive. There wasn't one bison. On the ceiling, dozens of bison wriggled alive. The Marquis was fascinated by the incredibly realistic, incredibly detailed and vibrant paintings.

As it turned out later, the bison was painted 14,000 years ago. Human art history begins with cave paintings. We all admire the murals of Altamira Caves, Lasko Caves, and Shobe Caves. The moment you look at the painting, you immediately understand it. The excitement and thrill that burst when I first meet the cave paintings, that is the first heart I encounter with art.

We are surprised to see bison, horses, deer, lions, bears, rhinos, hyenas, leopards and owls that reveal their overwhelming presence. What interpretation does it need? You can see how talented cave artists were. Later, the Altamira cave paintings were compared to the paintings of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, so they were called “Ancient Sistine Murals”.

Unfortunately, the Marquis of Shoutola, who discovered the Altamira Cave, was not recognized by the world and died of disappointment. The so-called expert archaeologists did not appreciate the ancient paintings. The world mocked and slandered him for deliberately hiring a painter, drawing pictures on the ceiling of the cave, and cheating. The human world is so savage to recognize people's sincerity. About 20 years after he died, cave murals were discovered all over the world, opening the heyday of cave mural research.

The discovery of Lasco cave paintings in 1940 surprised the world once again. The tension between two giant bison facing each other is scary. Horses are visible in the space of tension, but they are not drawn by hand. It is a picture drawn with the spray technique by biting the animal's cylindrical bones into their mouths and spraying them with paint.

The artistic achievements and abilities of cave artists are overwhelming. At this point, don't you feel that cave artists are as good as contemporary art?

So Picasso exclaimed, "They found everything about art." “Humanity hasn't improved in 20,000 years,” he lamented.

Many people say it is difficult to talk about pictures. I recommend that such people look at the paintings with the heart of being new to cave paintings. The murals of Altamira, Rasko, and Shobe caves are captivating us with the overwhelming presence of the soul and life. As such, a good picture has spiritual and magical power. And there is the energy of life.

We only guess what the purpose of the cave paintings were, but we do not know well. Why did the cave artist who captured a giant animal in the mural painting the picture? It is a philosophical and historical matter rather than the painting itself. In order to properly understand paintings, even such problems will have to be dealt with, but beginners who encounter paintings for the first time should only accept the image and vitality felt in the painting itself.
