Reflecting on Life While Ascending Mount Tai

After passing through Jinan, the "City of Waters," I spent a day journeying up Mount Tai—revered as the supreme peak among the Five Great Mountains. It was once a sacred space where heaven and humanity met, serving as a symbol of power and sovereignty where emperors performed rituals to offer sacrifices to the heavens.

Today, however, the significance of Mount Tai has shifted. In the past, it was a place where a ruler, having received the Mandate of Heaven, would prove his legitimacy; in modern times, it draws a steady stream of visitors who come to pray for good fortune, reflect on themselves, and contemplate the direction of their lives.

Reaching the summit of Mount Tai requires climbing countless steps, one by one. These steep stairs mirror our own lives; the arduous ascent to the heights is the result of innumerable small steps.

In my youth, I believed that reaching the summit first was what mattered most. Yet, as I enter the later stages of life and watch others making the climb, I realize that the mindset with which one walks the path is far more important than the summit itself.

Looking down from the peak of Mount Tai, the honor, power, and wealth that humans strive so hard to amass appear as mere specks against the mountain’s base, shrouded in mist and clouds.

When I look back on my own life, my thoughts dwell not on how high I climbed, but on how many people I embraced along the way and with what warmth I viewed the world.

On this steep climb, the children I once cared for now take my hand and lead the way.

At the end of summer, at the age of 73, we ascended Mount Tai together with the children we love.

Along that path, I reflect on the precious bonds I have shared.
