Nexon Foundation Launches Second Cohort of ‘Hello Mate’ Game Creation Mentorship Program for University Students
The Nexon Foundation is setting out to bridge the digital education gap by leveraging the innovative ideas of university students.
On the 10th, the Nexon Foundation announced the official launch of the second cohort of "Hello Mate," a volunteer mentoring program where university students create and teach games.
"Hello Mate" is a social contribution program in which university student mentors teach creative educational content—designed by the mentors themselves—to local youth, utilizing Nexon’s coding and game creation platforms, "HelloMaple" and "MapleStory Worlds."
The key feature of this second cohort is the significant expansion of platforms, target age groups, and the scope of social contribution activities compared to the first cohort.
The program will run for approximately five months, concluding in January 2027, with the participation of around 90 mentors—students from major universities such as Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University, and KAIST—and approximately 300 youth mentees. After completing preliminary training on the 12th, the student mentors will conduct mentoring activities for about 20 hours through December.
Notably, while the first cohort focused primarily on "HelloMaple" (a block-coding platform for elementary school students), the second cohort has expanded the educational scope to include middle school students by incorporating "MapleStory Worlds," a sandbox-style creation platform.
In addition, the program introduces a new volunteer initiative in partnership with the "Coding Class for Everyone" project operated by the Daejeon Social Service Agency; here, KAIST student mentors will provide special volunteer services targeting local youth and young adults who are "slow learners." For the university student mentors participating in the second cohort, the Nexon Foundation has arranged a variety of benefits and support measures, including invitations to visit the Nexon headquarters in Pangyo, opportunities for firsthand career mentoring with current Nexon employees, official certification of volunteer hours, and the issuance of completion certificates signed by the Foundation’s chairperson.
Kim Jung-wook, Chairperson of the Nexon Foundation, stated, "We prepared the second cohort by incorporating the educational outcomes and diverse field feedback gathered from the first 'Hello Mate' program." He added, "We will continue to provide support to bridge the digital education gap and empower young people—the future of our society—to build their capabilities."
