[Here is the English version of the article] 2026 World Smart City Expo Opens in Busan, Showcasing the Future of AI-Powered Cities

The 2026 World Smart City Expo is opening in Busan, bringing together technologies, services and new urban models designed to move cities beyond the smart-city era and into the age of artificial intelligence.

The three-day expo, jointly hosted by the Busan Metropolitan Government, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT, runs from Sept. 9 through 11 at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 1 in Busan.

The World Smart City Expo, the largest smart-city event in the Asia-Pacific region, was launched in 2017 and is marking its 10th anniversary this year. Under the theme “Beyond Smart City, Into AI City,” this year’s event looks back at a decade of smart-city development while showcasing emerging technologies and services for future cities, including the government’s new K-AI City initiative.

10th Anniversary Opening Ceremony Features Global Experts

The opening ceremony on Sept. 9 will feature a special ceremony marking the expo’s 10th anniversary, followed by keynote speeches from experts in Korea and abroad.

Kim Yong-seok, chairman of the Metropolitan Area Transport Commission at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, will deliver the opening remarks, followed by a congratulatory address from Alisher Abdykadyrov, head of the Alatau Development Authority in Kazakhstan.

AI at the Center of Future Urban Development

Major events at the expo will focus on how AI can shape the future of cities and create new urban models.

Launch ceremonies will be held for AI-focused pilot cities selected through a public competition in June, including Wonju and the Cheonan-Asan area, as well as Saemangeum AI Hydrogen City, which is being developed with investment from Hyundai Motor Group.

The WSCE Leaders Forum will bring together business leaders from Korea and abroad to discuss AI cities. Speakers include Hubert Beroche of Urban AI, Willy Kuo, co-founder of Linker Vision, Lee Jae-yong, an executive at Hyundai Motor Group, and Son Byung-hee, CEO of Maum AI. The forum will feature presentations and panel discussions on the future of AI-powered cities.

277 Organizations to Showcase Smart-City Technologies

A total of 277 organizations from Korea and abroad will take part in the exhibition, showcasing technologies and services across a wide range of smart-city fields, including AI, transportation and mobility, housing, energy and the environment, public safety and disaster prevention, and health care.

Major exhibition areas will include a joint pavilion for the AI-focused pilot cities of Wonju and Cheonan-Asan, as well as city pavilions featuring Ulsan, Daegu and Gwangmyeong.

Public-sector exhibitors will include Korea Land & Housing Corp., Korea Water Resources Corp. and Saemangeum Development Corp. Private-sector participants include Korean Air, Naver Cloud and KT.

Special exhibition areas will include the K-AI City Special Pavilion, which traces the development of smart cities over the past decade and introduces AI-city policies; the Busan Smart Ocean Pavilion, focused on future smart ports and AI technologies; and the Smart Green Build Lounge, where visitors can experience next-generation housing technologies such as zero-energy buildings and modular homes.

41 Conferences and Side Events to Explore the Future of AI Cities

The expo will also host 41 conferences and related events designed to share knowledge and experience in smart-city and AI-city development while expanding cooperation among industry, academia, research institutions and government.

The K-AI City Policy Conference will introduce the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s implementation strategy for K-AI City, along with development plans for AI-focused pilot cities such as Wonju, Cheonan-Asan and the Saemangeum Waterfront City.

Other programs will explore major areas of smart-city development, including AI-powered maritime and port technologies, digital twins, carbon neutrality, hydrogen cities and smart buildings.

Two special conferences, the Urban AI Symposium and the Screenless City Conference, will examine sustainable governance models for AI-powered cities.

The AI City Talk Concert will give the public a more accessible look at the future of AI cities, featuring science-focused YouTubers including Orbit, Hangseong, Yak and Heo Seong-beom.

Business Programs to Connect Companies With Global Buyers

The expo will also offer business programs designed to help participating companies expand into domestic and international markets and build new partnerships.

A buyer-matching event will bring together 42 buyers from 18 countries and 20 Korean buyers, while a dedicated buyer area will provide opportunities for investment matching between companies.

An Open Innovation program featuring KT and Dassault Systèmes will support technology partnerships between established companies and small businesses and startups. Open innovation refers to the use of external technologies and ideas to develop new products, services and business models.

K-ICT WEEK in BUSAN to Run Alongside the Expo

K-ICT WEEK in BUSAN, the region’s largest comprehensive information and communications technology event, will also be held alongside the World Smart City Expo for the second consecutive year.

The event will feature exhibitions and programs covering a broad range of technologies, including ICT, AI, cloud computing, robotics and quantum technology.

Land Minister Kim Yoon-duk said the 2026 World Smart City Expo offers an opportunity to experience firsthand the AI cities being developed by the ministry based on the achievements of the smart-city sector over the past decade.

“We will move beyond simply applying technology and build K-AI cities as warm, future-oriented urban communities where technology serves people,” Kim said.

Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said it was especially meaningful to host the 10th-anniversary edition of the World Smart City Expo in Busan, South Korea’s maritime capital.

“Busan will lead the way in developing a people-centered AI city model by applying innovative technologies across the city, including its maritime and port sectors,” Jeon said.

More information about the 2026 World Smart City Expo is available on the event’s official website.
