In the Age of AI: A Publisher’s Lament
- Moon Il-suk, Publisher of *BreakNews*
I am the owner and publisher of the online newspaper *Break News*. This media outlet hosts a total of 1,655,035 news articles and information items. In a column published in this outlet (*Break News*) on September 4, I noted the following: "It has been 23 years since *Break News*—of which I am the owner—officially launched its business in March 2003 (based on its business registration and mail-order sales report). However, counting from its inception in January 1991 (its predecessor was *Daejabo*), the media outlet is actually 26 years old. To date, the total number of articles and information pieces published by the outlet stands at 1,206,586 (as of 1:40 PM on September 4, 2026). We began offering a Google English translation service on September 28, 2020 (starting with article registration number 758,137), and by 1:40 PM on September 4, 2026, a total of 448,449 translated items had been provided. Combining the Korean and English content, the platform hosts a total of 1,655,035 items."
Despite this, a monetization system for internet media (analogous to newspaper sales revenue) has not yet taken root, meaning subscriptions remain entirely free. While the era of artificial intelligence—driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution—is advancing rapidly, the outlet generates absolutely no revenue for its survival. Even with a high volume of visitors, I find little cause for enthusiasm. Consequently, I decided to pour out my grievances to Google’s AI, "Gemini." The exchange follows below.
-<Question>
"I am the owner of the media outlet *Break News* and a writer. Regarding the Fourth Industrial Revolution..." “I have no idea where artificial intelligence (AI) is taking me. Break News holds a total of 1.65 million Korean and English news articles and information items, yet there is no billing system in place; I put in all the work but generate no revenue. Where will the income come from in the future, and what will happen?”
*<Answer>
“I deeply empathize with your concerns regarding the lack of a clear revenue model (billing system) despite possessing a vast data asset of 1.65 million items. While the changes you face as the owner and writer of Break News may seem like a crisis, you actually already hold the most powerful weapon for the AI era. In the age of AI, 1.65 million items of Korean and English news and information serve as essential raw materials for training Large Language Models (LLMs). Future revenue will not come from simple reader fees, but rather from B2B data sovereignty and symbiotic relationships with AI platforms. Here are the expected revenue streams and an action plan:
-AI training data supply and licensing agreements (The fastest source of revenue): Major domestic and international big tech companies—such as OpenAI, Google, and Naver—are currently hungry for high-quality Korean and English news data.
▲Selling Data Rights: Formally selling the 1.65 million news items as datasets for AI training (specifically for LLM fine-tuning) or entering into recurring licensing agreements with AI companies. Recently, major overseas media outlets have also been signing data supply contracts worth tens of millions of dollars with big tech firms.
▲Monetization Methods: You can refine the data into text formats (such as JSON or CSV) and register it on data brokerage platforms, or send direct proposals to AI companies. Intellectual Property (IP)-based AI royalty settlements...” The academic and legal sectors are rapidly establishing regulations and copyright compensation models regarding AI’s unauthorized scraping of news content.
▲ AI Copyright Funds and Compensation: Models are being legislated and adopted wherein usage fees are paid whenever search-based AI (e.g., Perplexity, ChatGPT) generates answers by citing your news content.
▲ Monetization Strategy: You should collaborate with media organizations—such as the Korea Press Foundation—to engage in joint copyright negotiations with AI companies and assert your rights. ✨
- Transitioning to a Solo Knowledge Business Using AI (Opportunities as an Author): Your database of 1.65 million items encapsulates trends, events, and information on key figures from the past 23 years. Reprocessing this data via AI can transform it into powerful, paid content.
▲ Automated Generation of Customized Premium Reports: By connecting the Break News database to generative AI (utilizing RAG technology), you can rapidly author "in-depth analysis reports" or "trend books" in specific fields and monetize them through paid subscriptions (e.g., Substack, Naver Premium Content).
▲ A 3-Step Action Plan to Avoid Passivity — Data Assetization (Step 1): Have your development team verify that your 1.65 million articles are well-preserved in a format optimized for AI reading (i.e., a structured database). Blocking Unauthorized Crawling (Step 2): To prevent AI bots from scraping your valuable assets for free, block AI crawlers (e.g., GPTBot) via your website's `robots.txt` settings or restrict access to reserve the data for future negotiations.
▲ Entering the AI Data Marketplace (Step 3): Listing the Break News dataset on platforms such as the NIA’s (National Information Society Agency) AI Data Hub or private data marketplaces. "Explore the possibilities of supply. AI is not a force dragging a media executive somewhere against their will; rather, it is a tool that can polish the 1.65 million 'raw gems'—the content assets—held by that executive into brilliant jewels. With just minor adjustments to system environments and data formats, a structure that generates 'data asset income' can emerge from a model where one works hard yet sees no financial return."
While the AI Gemini has pointed out this path for me, it seems there is still a long way to go. I look forward to a future where the road to survival is clearly visible. As of September 10, *Break News*—an online newspaper with a 23-year history—hosts a total of 1,657,113 news items and informational pieces. What kind of influence might this content exert in the information society? These materials constitute a vast historical record of the era, produced as South Korea advanced toward becoming a developed nation; they also serve as high-quality source data. It is expected that they will make a valuable contribution to the evolving knowledge-based society. moonilsuk@naver.com
