US-Iran Military Conflict Escalates: Retaliatory Bombing of US Base Follows Tanker Attacks

Military tensions between the United States and Iran are escalating once again. After the US attacked five Iranian oil tankers in response to Iranian ballistic missile strikes, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retaliated by bombing a US military base in Jordan.

According to Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the IRGC stated on the 8th (local time) that it had "carried out a devastating missile attack targeting US forces stationed at the Al-Azraq base in Jordan."

The IRGC claimed the strike was intended to "punish the aggressor" and reported launching multiple solid- and liquid-fueled ballistic missiles.

They further claimed to have inflicted massive damage on US forces by striking hangars and facilities used for the maintenance, preparation, and deployment of F-35, F-16, and F-15 fighter jets.

In contrast, the Jordanian military asserted that most of the Iranian missiles were intercepted, stating, "We intercepted 18 of the 20 ballistic missiles launched by Iran, while the remaining two fell in sparsely populated areas; there were no casualties."

According to the Associated Press, US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the IRGC had targeted US Navy vessels with ballistic missiles twice over the past two days, but the ships successfully evaded the attacks, and there were no US casualties.

The US military also announced that, in response, it had attacked four Iranian tankers—the M/T Kabiz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, and M/T Riesco—in the Gulf of Oman, as well as the M/T Derya near Kharg Island. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also warned that the United States would continue to respond to Iranian attacks.

Speaking to reporters while visiting Colombia, Rubio stated, "Iran keeps trying to attack U.S. Navy vessels. However, every time they attempt an attack, they will suffer the loss of oil tankers," adding, "I expect such an incident to occur again today."

Iran, however, has signaled that it will not stand idly by. The Revolutionary Guard Navy warned of retaliation against any further U.S. attacks. The Revolutionary Guard demanded that crews of oil tankers anchored near the ports of Kuwait and Bahrain immediately abandon their ships, stating that vessels remaining in the area could become targets for retaliation over the U.S. attack on an Iranian tanker.

Meanwhile, as military tensions between the two nations escalate, international energy markets are once again in turmoil. On the 8th, Brent crude—the international benchmark—briefly surged to $99.46 per barrel, bringing it to the brink of surpassing the $100 mark.
