Stock Holdings of Major Conglomerate Owner Families Account for 10.2% of Fair Assets; Samsung Surpasses 100 Trillion Won

It has been found that the value of affiliate shares held by the owner families of major domestic business groups amounts to approximately 10% of their total fair assets.

Notably, the Samsung owner family secured the top spot by a wide margin, becoming the first in Korea to see the value of their shareholdings surpass 100 trillion won, driven by the boom from the semiconductor "super-cycle."

According to a report by CEO Score on the 9th—which analyzed 89 business groups subject to disclosure requirements (those with a designated head) as of 2026—the total fair assets of these groups amounted to 3,239.7388 trillion won, while the value of affiliate shares held by owner families totaled 331.5644 trillion won. The ratio of owner family share value to total fair assets stood at 10.2%.

Samsung, the nation's largest business group, recorded the highest figures in both categories, with fair assets of 695.9017 trillion won and owner family share value of 101.5881 trillion won. The Samsung owner family was the only one among domestic companies to exceed the 100-trillion-won mark in share value; their share value also represented 14.6% of their fair assets, the highest ratio among the top 10 groups.

In contrast, SK Group—ranked second in asset size with fair assets of 421.9996 trillion won—saw its owner family share value reach 10.4390 trillion won, representing just 2.5% of its fair assets. Meanwhile, third-ranked Hyundai Motor Group (fair assets of 320.8453 trillion won) recorded an owner family share value of 18.3089 trillion won (5.7%), a figure higher than that of SK Group. An analysis of the ratio of the owner family's stock value to the group's fair assets among the top 10 conglomerates showed that Samsung had the highest ratio at 14.6%, followed by GS (10.0%), HD Hyundai (6.3%), Hyundai Motor (5.7%), Hanwha (4.6%), LG (3.8%), SK (2.5%), Shinsegae (2.4%), Hanjin (2.0%), and Lotte (0.8%).

Notably, Lotte Group was the only one among the top 10 conglomerates to record a ratio below 1%; the owner family's stock value stood at 1.1551 trillion won against domestic affiliate fair assets of 142.4062 trillion won, resulting in a ratio of 0.8%.

There was also a distinct difference between the ranking of the group's assets and the value of affiliate shares held by individual heads of the conglomerates. Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong held the highest value of domestic affiliate shares among conglomerate heads, totaling 47.0596 trillion won (across six affiliates).

He was followed by Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun (8.3339 trillion won across nine affiliates), SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won (7.0824 trillion won across six affiliates), LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo (3.0716 trillion won across two affiliates), and Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin (1.0329 trillion won across 13 affiliates).

The value of shares held by Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Eui-sun (ranked third in the business world) was approximately 1.2515 trillion won higher than that of SK Chairman Chey Tae-won (ranked second). Notably, four members of the Samsung owner family—Chairman Lee Jae-yong, former Leeum Museum of Art Director Hong Ra-hee (18.9752 trillion won), Hotel Shilla CEO Lee Boo-jin (18.3560 trillion won), and Samsung C&T CEO Lee Seo-hyun (16.9714 trillion won)—swept the top four spots in terms of the value of personally held shares.

Among the 89 corporate groups, Iljin Global recorded the highest ratio of owner family share value to total assets; the owner family's share value stood at 3.4232 trillion won against total assets of 5.0601 trillion won, representing 67.7%.

Following Iljin Global, two other groups—MDM (56.1%; 8.7716 trillion won in assets, 4.9202 trillion won in share value) and Sono International (53.5%; 10.4497 trillion won in assets, 5.5858 trillion won in share value)—also saw the ratio of owner family share value to total assets exceed 50%.

These groups were characterized by the owner family directly holding substantial stakes in major affiliates, including numerous unlisted companies.

Other groups with high ratios included Daekwang (47.8%), Sinokor Merchant Marine (47.7%), Daebang Construction (46.8%), HYBE (39.2%), Bando Holdings (37.5%), LINE (37.0%), and EcoPro (36.5%).

Conversely, QCP Group recorded the lowest ratio among the 89 corporate groups; the owner family's share value was 15.2 billion won against total assets of 5.1410 trillion won, amounting to just 0.3%. Following them, the lower tier consisted of Taeyoung (0.4%; fair assets of KRW 10.1685 trillion, stock value of KRW 37.8 billion), Lotte (0.8%), HL (1.5%), Woongjin (1.7%), Kolon (1.8%), Eugene (1.9%), and Bithumb, Hanjin, and LX (2.0% each).
