[Here is the English version of the article] Busan Hosts 2026 Global City Week to Strengthen Its Role as a Global Maritime Hub

Busan is hosting the 2026 Busan Global City Week from Sept. 8 to 10, bringing together experts and officials from global maritime cities to discuss the future of ports, cities and international cooperation as the city marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of Busan Port.

The three-day event will include the Busan Global City Forum, visits to the World Smart City Expo and tours of major sites including Busan New Port. The city also invited a delegation from Guangzhou, China, as part of efforts to expand exchanges and cooperation between the two port cities.

The Busan Global City Week, now in its third year, is designed to promote international exchanges and share policies and experiences among Busan and its sister and partner cities.

The Busan Global City Forum, held Tuesday at the Paradise Hotel Busan, is being organized under the theme “From Port to Global Maritime Capital: Busan Connecting the World for 150 Years.” The forum focuses on Busan’s future as a global maritime city and ways to strengthen networks among maritime cities at home and abroad.

The main theme of the forum is “Sea, Port and City: A New Future for Global Maritime Cities.” Participants will examine how Busan can build on its maritime and port assets while developing a stronger global identity and long-term growth strategy.

Tyler Rasch, an environmental and international affairs commentator, will deliver a keynote speech on the opportunities and challenges Busan faces in the era of the Arctic shipping route.

Experts from South Korea, China and Singapore will take part in discussions on maritime city branding and sustainable port development.

The first session will examine how maritime cities can strengthen their identity and global brand. Participants include officials from South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Maritime Institute, as well as Li Haizhou, secretary-general of the Standing Committee of the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Congress, and Koh Puay Guan, a professor at the National University of Singapore.

The second session will focus on international cooperation for sustainable port development and ways to promote port cities through modernization of the fisheries industry. Hafida Fahmiasari, a World Bank transportation and port specialist, and representatives from the Port of Guangzhou will join South Korean maritime and port experts for the discussion.

The Guangzhou delegation will visit the World Smart City Expo at BEXCO on Wednesday to examine recent technologies and policy developments in smart cities. The delegation will then visit Busan New Port to learn about the city’s port infrastructure and smart and environmentally friendly port operations.

Busan officials said the program is intended to deepen the Guangzhou delegation’s understanding of the city’s major policies and industries while strengthening mutual understanding and cooperation between the two cities.

Na Yun-bin, Busan’s director general for tourism and MICE, said the event would connect discussions on the future of maritime cities with visits to major technology and port facilities, creating opportunities for more practical cooperation between cities.

The 2026 Busan Global City Week runs from Sept. 8 to 10 in Busan.
