The Experience of the ‘Young Elderly Era’ Is Not a Departure, but a Crucial Human Resource for the Nation
- Kim Jung-ki, Political Columnist
Today’s politics races forward but lacks safety and depth. Confrontations are fierce, yet the wisdom to resolve problems through mediation is scarce; people readily blame one another, but there is no sign of self-reflection on their own shortcomings.
The more this happens, the more valuable it is to look back. I believe this lies in the wisdom of elders and the public role of senior leadership.
I have realized something through my public activities and social experiences. The strength that has protected a community from crisis often stems from accumulated experience rather than momentary skills. As conflicts grew, cool-headed judgment was required; as confrontation intensified, the language of integration became crucial. One of the forces that has played this role was wisdom derived from experience.
We often view old age solely from the perspective of protection and welfare. However, old age is not merely an object of care, but also a public asset accumulated by the community. The experience of passing through countless failures, mediations, conflicts, and reconciliations is not merely years of wisdom, but social capital.
If youth is the energy that drives change, then experience is the sense of direction that holds that change together so it does not lose its way.
I do not view elder politics as an extension of past authority. The proper role of an elder lies not in clinging to power, but in maintaining the balance of the community. Maintaining balance when conflicts spiral into extremes and offering a long-term perspective in the face of hasty judgments—that is the true essence of elder leadership.
This is precisely where our society is lacking today. We are overflowing with the skills to win, but we lack the wisdom to walk together.
Wise leadership stems not from flaunting power, but from knowing how to exercise restraint. Integration comes not merely from words, but from reducing conflict. In this sense, the wisdom of old age can be an asset to democracy, not a burden of the times.
However, what matters is not age itself, but reflected experience. Seniority is not wisdom. Experience becomes a social asset only when it is sublimated into public good.
What is needed going forward is not generational competition, but reflected cooperation. The creativity of youth. A community can become healthier when the execution power of middle age is combined with the wisdom of the elderly.
An aging society may not be an era of burden, but an era of opportunity to rediscover wisdom.
I am convinced that experience is not something to be discarded, but a national asset. Furthermore, the wisdom of the elderly is a crucial pillar of public leadership that we must revive. pss2242@naver.com
