Large Corporations Drop 15% in New Hires Over Two Years... Warning Signs for ‘Inverted Triangle’ Workforce Structure

The phenomenon of a "generational reversal" is accelerating at major domestic conglomerates as the proportion of young workers (under 30) decreases while that of middle-aged workers (over 50) increases.

With workforce turnover slowing due to reduced new hiring and delayed retirements by senior employees, this trend is expected to become even more pronounced due to the expanded adoption of AI technology.

According to Leaders Index on the 18th, an analysis of the three-year employment status (2023–2025) of 132 companies that disclosed all relevant personnel figures out of the 163 companies among the top 500 that submitted sustainability reports revealed that the total workforce decreased by 3,877 people, from 1,262,928 in 2023 to 1,259,051 in 2025.

By age group, the proportion of young workers aged 30 or under decreased by 36,909 people (13.8%), falling from 267,343 to 230,434. The proportion of total employment also decreased from 21.2% to 18.3%.

Conversely, the number of employed individuals aged 50 or older increased by 10,715 (4.8%) during the same period, rising from 221,333 to 231,848. Their share of total employment also rose from 17.5% to 18.4%, surpassing the proportion of those aged 30 or younger.

The scale of new hires also decreased by 15.3%, falling from 109,456 in 2023 to 92,680 in 2025 based on 113 companies.

While the proportion of new hires aged 30 or younger dropped from 56.4% to 51.1%, the proportion of those aged 50 or older rose by 2.9 percentage points, from 8.3% to 11.2%. A study found that an inverted triangle workforce structure has intensified, with the proportion of the workforce aged 50 or older reaching several times that of those aged 30 or younger, particularly in domestic-oriented sectors such as telecommunications, food and beverage, construction and building materials, retail, and insurance.

In the retail sector, the proportion of those aged 50 or older reached 31.8%. Notably, Lotte Shopping showed a gap of more than eight times, with those aged 50 or older accounting for 44.1% and those aged 30 or younger for 5.2%; Harim also displayed a 4.1-fold difference, with those aged 50 or older at 41.8% and those aged 30 or younger at 10.1%.

The proportion of those aged 50 or older in the food and beverage sector was 30.6%. KT&G had a high proportion of those aged 50 or older at 39.7%, while Hite Jinro showed a 4.3-fold gap, with those aged 50 or older at 32.8% and those aged 30 or younger at 7.6%. In particular, Hite Jinro saw a 98.8% drop in new hires aged 29 or younger, falling from 82 in 2023 to just one last year.

Lotte Chilsung Beverage recorded a proportion of those aged 30 or younger at only 4.6%, a gap of more than five times compared to those aged 50 or older, and new hires aged 29 or younger also decreased from 197 to 50.

The construction and building materials sector recorded a proportion of those aged 50 or older at 29.7%. Kolon Global showed a 3.6-fold difference, with those aged 50 or older accounting for 39.7% and those aged 30 or younger at 10.9%; while total new hires increased from 578 to 660, hiring of those aged 29 or younger actually decreased from 201 to 191. IPARK Hyundai Development Company showed a difference of approximately three times, with those aged 50 or older accounting for 35.2% and those aged 30 or younger for 11.8%. While total hiring increased from 383 to 417, hiring of young people decreased from 119 to 90, while new hires of those aged 50 or older increased from 43 to 79, presenting a stark contrast. GS E&C also recorded 33.4% for those aged 50 or older and 10.4% for those aged 30 or younger.

The telecommunications sector showed a gap of 3.9 times, with the proportion of those aged 50 or older at 25.6% and those aged 30 or younger at 6.6%. KT did not disclose its workforce status by age group.

In the insurance sector, the overall average proportion of employees aged 50 or older was 25.4%, while those aged 30 or younger accounted for 10.0%, showing a 2.5-fold gap. Samsung Life Insurance recorded a 4.5-fold gap, with those aged 50 or older at 28.3% and those aged 30 or younger at 6.2%. Hanwha Life Insurance showed a difference of approximately three times, with figures of 27.2% and 8.9% respectively, and new hires of those aged 29 or younger also decreased by 62.7%, from 150 to 56.

Conversely, some large conglomerates presented a contrasting picture by increasing new hires and significantly expanding the influx of young people.

SK Hynix saw its total new hires surge by 333.2%, rising from 739 to 3,201, with hiring of young adults increasing more than tenfold, from 228 to 2,560. Hanwha Aerospace saw an 89.7% increase in new hires among young adults, rising from 426 to 808, while Samsung Biologics also saw a 136.1% increase, from 205 to 484.

Kia also saw a 63.6% increase in total new hires, rising from 836 to 1,368, while hiring of young adults increased by 79.5%, from 527 to 946.

However, within the same Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai Motor Company showed a different trend. While total new hires decreased by 43.9% from 25,419 to 14,253, hiring of young people plummeted by 65.1% from 16,551 to 5,782. During this period, new hires aged 50 or older increased by 14.0% from 2,968 to 3,383.
