“Satisfying the Five Senses with the Savory Aroma of Glutinous Barley”… Yeonggwang County Successfully Concludes ‘Glutinous Barley Summer Vacation Cooking Class’
Held a total of 4 times starting July 23… 160 teams of children (elementary school age and younger) and their guardians participated in large numbers - From madeleines to focaccia pizza, participants made unique desserts using local specialties - Yeonggwang County Agricultural Technology Center: “We will strive to promote the value of local agricultural products and spread a healthy food culture”
(Yeonggwang = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The ‘Glutinous Barley Summer Vacation Cooking Class,’ organized by Yeonggwang County in the Jeonnam Gwangju Integrated Special City using glutinous barley, a representative local specialty, has successfully concluded amidst enthusiastic responses from participants.
According to the Yeonggwang County Agricultural Technology Center, the program was held at the Yeonggwang Glutinous Barley Community Center over a total of four sessions from July 23 to August 13. It was planned to inform children, the future generation, of the outstanding value of local agricultural specialties and to provide a beneficial cultural experience opportunity for the whole family to participate in together during the summer vacation. This cooking class was conducted as a family-friendly experience, with children aged elementary school or younger forming pairs consisting of a guardian. With 40 teams per session, a total of 160 teams (approximately 320 participants) took part, attracting explosive interest from the recruitment stage onwards.
In particular, Yeonggwang County dramatically increased familiarity with barley—which can sometimes feel unfamiliar or rigid to children—by incorporating it into everyday dessert and cooking recipes highly favored by kids, such as madeleines, cookies, and pizza.
The program consisted of hands-on, practice-oriented education tailored to children's level, including making glutinous barley madeleines (Session 1), glutinous barley s'mores cookies (Session 2), glutinous barley carrot cupcakes (Session 3), and glutinous barley focaccia pizza (Session 4).
The classes were conducted entirely in a hands-on manner, allowing participants to personally prepare ingredients, knead dough, and create finished products. Through a cooking process that stimulated their five senses, the children naturally learned the principles of how food is made, and felt a deep sense of accomplishment and joy while tasting the dishes they had prepared themselves. In addition, thorough safety training was conducted prior to the practical session, and guardians were instructed to closely accompany the participants throughout the entire process, creating a safe and pleasant experience environment without a single safety accident.
Yeonggwang County, Korea's representative 'Barley Industry Special Zone,' is being praised for developing this cooking class beyond a simple one-time cooking experience into a venue for proper dietary education that conveys the value and excellence of local agricultural products to future generations.
Through the process of families cooking together, the event achieved a triple benefit: strengthening the bond between parents and children, promoting the consumption of local agricultural specialties, and revitalizing the space of the 'Chalbori Eoulteo' (Sticky Barley Community Center).
Jeong Jae-wook, Director of the Yeonggwang County Agricultural Technology Center, stated, "I hope this program served as an opportunity for children to become familiar with our local agricultural products and experience the joy of cooking," adding, "We will continue to strive to spread a healthy food culture by discovering various experience and educational programs utilizing local agricultural specialties." Meanwhile, Yeonggwang County plans to continue operating experience programs that promote the value of local agricultural specialties centered around the Yeonggwang Chalbori Eoulteo, and to expand projects to revitalize rural culture and experience spaces.
