The vision is to elevate the automotive industry ecosystem of the Southwest region to a world-class level by reorganizing the entire process—from product planning and design to manufacturing, logistics, and virtual testing—around AI, going beyond the simple robotization of production lines or process automation.
On the 13th, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City held the "Southwest Mobility M.AX Forum" at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center under the theme "The Great Manufacturing AI Transformation Opened by Future Mobility and Humanoids," with approximately 100 key officials from industry, academia, research institutes, and government in attendance. Organized in alignment with the government's national policy direction for the transition to manufacturing AI, this forum was co-hosted by National Assembly members Jeong Jin-wook and Lim Moon-young and co-organized by the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), the AI Industry-Academic Alliance, and the Korea Mobility Society, adding significant weight to the event. Experts and policy committee members present at the event agreed to comprehensively expand an organic cooperation system encompassing the private, public, and academic sectors, using the ‘AIDX Innovation Council for Future Vehicles’ as a base.
In his opening remarks, National Assembly member Jeong Jin-wook, who co-hosted the event, emphasized, “The current shift in the industrial paradigm has completely moved beyond the level of merely deploying AI as an auxiliary tool in specific processes.” He added, “Only by deeply integrating AI into the entire automobile manufacturing process—including planning, design, production, and quality verification—can we secure overwhelming competitiveness in the global market. The National Assembly will spare no legal or financial support to foster regional manufacturing innovation and create a future mobility ecosystem.”
National Assembly member Im Moon-young also delivered a congratulatory message via video, stating, “AI-based manufacturing innovation has already become a reality that determines the survival of industrial sites,” and urged local companies to respond proactively and preemptively to the flow of technological change. In his opening remarks, Jung Gu-min, Co-Chair of the AIDX Innovation Council, stated, “As AI, autonomous driving, and software technologies organically combine, the boundaries of the traditional automotive industry are rapidly expanding into hyper-connected mobility, including robots, unmanned vessels, and Urban Air Mobility (UAM).” He further assessed, “The synergy between Gwangju’s accumulated AI infrastructure and its solid automotive manufacturing base will become a key driving force to propel Korea’s future industries.”
The forum was meticulously organized with a keynote speech covering global technology trends and detailed technology forums divided into six specialized divisions, presenting a milestone for a substantial technological transformation.
Im Hyun-taek, Head of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), who served as the keynote speaker, analyzed global technology trends such as Software-Driven Vehicles (SDV), high-performance autonomous driving, and humanoid robotics. Director Lim presented directions for fostering future growth engines, such as the development of automotive AI semiconductors and Purpose-Built Vehicle (PBV) services, and suggested that “large-scale joint demonstration projects combining industry, academia, and research institutes are essential to achieve an AI transformation that automakers and first- to third-tier parts suppliers can tangibly experience.”
Following this, Kim Seong-cheol, General Manager of QNX, garnered attention by unveiling a platform software architecture and demonstration roadmap designed to expand the application of highly advanced Functional Safety and cybersecurity technologies, which have been rigorously tested in the automotive sector, to general manufacturing, logistics, and robotic systems.
In the subsequent technology forum, a total of 20 top domestic and international experts delivered presentations across six divisions: Global Mobility Core Technologies, Mobility Manufacturing AX Innovation, AI Autonomous Driving Innovation, SDV & Software-Centric Factory (SDF), Autonomous Driving Core Technologies, and Expansion of the Future Mobility Ecosystem.
In particular, the "deployment of humanoid robots" into manufacturing sites emerged as the hottest topic, alongside "digital twin" technology—which replicates the actual factory environment in a virtual space for pre-verification—AI-based smart factories, and sensors, communication, and security solutions for autonomous driving. Specific scenarios were presented to reduce the musculoskeletal burden on workers and simultaneously boost productivity and safety by deploying humanoids early into assembly processes that require complex judgment beyond simple repetitive tasks.
Lee Seung-ju, a center director at the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), elaborated on a technical commercialization roadmap, stating, "We must establish a 'human-robot safe collaboration environment' by deploying humanoids in areas requiring high flexibility and judgment, such as automotive assembly processes."
Taking this forum as an opportunity, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is accelerating large-scale national demonstration projects. In partnership with Ulsan Metropolitan City, one of the nation's largest automotive production hubs, the city is planning the "Humanoid-based Automotive Industry M.AX Transition Project," which precisely reflects the on-site demands of finished vehicle and parts manufacturers. This project is a large-scale undertaking that will invest a total of 58 billion won over five years, from 2027 to 2031. The plan is to complete the two major axes of Korea's manufacturing AI connecting the Southwest and Southeast regions by gradually introducing and demonstrating customized humanoid robots at the actual manufacturing sites of two local automakers and approximately 700 first- to third-tier parts suppliers.
Son Doo-young, Director General of the Artificial Intelligence Industry Bureau of Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated, "The global manufacturing industry is currently undergoing a massive transformation in which the production paradigm is being completely reorganized around AI." He added, "We will mobilize all administrative and financial capabilities—ranging from R&D support and field demonstrations to infrastructure construction and the creation of an industrial ecosystem—to ensure that local automotive and parts companies do not fall behind during this unprecedented period of change and can secure global technological leadership."
