【Break News Gyeongbuk】 Reporter Lee Seong-hyeon = A pest emergency has been declared in chili pepper fields in the Gyeongbuk region due to the recent prolonged heatwave and drought.
This is because the possibility of an outbreak of the "spotted spider mite," which deals a direct blow to the quality and yield of chili peppers during the harvest season (August-September), is increasing as the hot and dry weather continues for an extended period.
With the chili pepper harvest season approaching in August and September, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services strongly urged farmers to conduct thorough early monitoring and timely pest control to prevent damage caused by stunted growth and reduced yields resulting from increased densities of spotted spider mites.

Northern Gyeongbuk, which recorded the lowest rainfall in history... High temperatures and dryness persist this year. The "spotted spider mite," which primarily damages chili peppers, is a representative thermophilic pest whose egg-laying and reproduction rates increase explosively in dry and hot environments with relative humidity of around 50%.
According to actual climate statistical analysis by the Korea Meteorological Administration (observation points in Andong, Bonghwa, and Uiseong from 1973 to 2025), rainfall in major chili pepper-producing regions of North Gyeongsang Province was the fourth lowest on record in 2024, and recorded the lowest rainfall since observations began in 2025, indicating that drought and heatwaves have persisted for several years.
These abnormal climate conditions have laid the groundwork for an exponential increase in the mite population. This year, too, due to the scorching heatwave and drought that have continued since July, mite infestations and damage are already being noticeably observed in some farm fields.
Microscopic pests smaller than 0.5mm… Checking the underside of leaves with a magnifying glass is essential
Adult spider mites are very small, measuring less than 0.5mm, making them difficult to identify with the naked eye. Furthermore, early symptoms of damage are very similar to physiological disorders such as general calcium deficiency, making it easy to miss the optimal timing for pest control.
Initially, fine discolored spots appear between the veins of chili pepper leaves. However, if left untreated and allowed to grow in density, the entire leaf turns yellow (chlorosis), and cobwebs become entangled. This ultimately leads to leaf drop and a decline in fruit quality, ruining the entire year's harvest.
Experts advise that if suspicious symptoms appear, one must carefully observe the "underside of the leaves" using a loupe or magnifying glass. If self-diagnosis is difficult, it is safest to contact a nearby Agricultural Technology Center or Agricultural Research Institute immediately.
Once an infestation is confirmed, pesticides specifically designed for spider mites must be sprayed immediately. Since mites primarily inhabit the undersides of leaves, ensuring the solution is applied evenly to thoroughly wet the leaf surfaces is crucial for successful control. Furthermore, as mites are pests that develop resistance to pesticides very quickly, it is wise to alternate the application of pesticides with different mechanisms of action.
When applying pesticides during the harvest season, strict adherence to "safe usage standards" specified on the pesticide label—such as the number of days of pre-harvest application and the frequency of treatment—is essential to ensure consumer safety. Shin Jong-hee, head of the Yeongyang Chili Pepper Research Institute, emphasized, “As the trend of high temperature and humidity or high temperature and dryness is expected to continue until September this year as well, the risk of mite damage during the harvest season is higher than ever,” adding, “The best way for farmers to protect their yield is to frequently inspect the undersides of leaves to detect them early and to take timely measures immediately upon discovery.”
