North Gyeongsang Province Distributes 800,000 High-Quality Prefabricated 'Willowfish', a High-Value Native Fish... Accelerating Industrialization of Inland Aquaculture

Successfully Produced a Record High of 900,000... Paid Distribution to Farmers Interested in Aquaculture

Ships Available After an Additional 4–6 Months of Rearing; High-Income Species Trading at Up to 35,000 Won Per kg

A Species Inhabiting Clear Upstream Waters with Strong Environmental Tolerance... Native Fish Industrialization Center Completes Mass Production System

The Native Fish Industrialization Center of the North Gyeongsang Fisheries Research Institute has launched a large-scale distribution of high-quality 'Willowfish' prefabricated fish to promote the development of the province's inland aquaculture industry and increase fishermen's income. North Gyeongsang Province announced that it distributed 800,000 high-quality prefabricated fish to farms interested in inland aquaculture within the province from July 27 to 29. The willow fish distributed this time are high-quality seeds measuring 4–5 cm, raised from eggs collected in April of this year through July following strict broodstock management that began last year. The Center succeeded in producing a record-breaking 900,000 fish this year and selected the final recipient households after accepting applications via the provincial website last June.

If raised for an additional 4 to 6 months at the receiving households, the fish will grow to a marketable size of 8–10 cm. Willow fish are a high-value species traded at around 25,000 to 35,000 won per kilogram, and are expected to breathe new vitality into the inland aquaculture industry, which has recently been experiencing a downturn.

The Native Fish Industrialization Center embarked on experimental research on willow fish in 2021 and has continued its research and development efforts. From 2021 to the present, a total of 2.5 million fish have been produced, with 780,000 released into the natural ecosystem and 1.52 million distributed to fish farms. In particular, a mass production system capable of stably producing over 500,000 fish annually starting from 2025 has been completed.

Nam Geon, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, “We will actively support inland fishermen through the establishment of a mass production system for the willow fish,” adding, “We will accelerate the industrialization of inland aquaculture by expanding the stable aquaculture base and supply system through continuous education and technology dissemination.”

Meanwhile, the willow fish, belonging to the family Cyprinidae within the order Cypriniformes, typically grows to a size of 8 to 15 cm and features a dark brown coloration on a yellowish-brown background. Its external characteristics include a lighter-colored belly and a broad, indistinct dark brown vertical stripe running down the center of its body.

While it primarily inhabits mountain streams or the upper reaches of rivers where the water is clean and the temperature is low, it has strong tolerance to external environments and adapts well to the middle reaches of rivers connected to tributaries, dam lakes, and reservoirs. It is known to be distributed in Korea, China, Japan, and other regions. The spawning season in the wild is between May and June. Its advantages include soft bones that allow it to be eaten whole and tender flesh, but it is highly favored among freshwater fish enthusiasts for its versatility, as it is used in various dishes such as spicy fish stew, braised fish, and fried fish.
