Gyeongbuk’s August Culinary Keyword is ‘Chewiness’… Introducing Cheongdo Enoki Mushrooms and East Coast Clams
Seasonal delicacies set to fill Gyeongbuk’s dining tables in midsummer have been introduced. Cheongdo enoki mushrooms and East Coast clams have been selected as the representative ingredients for a culinary trip to Gyeongbuk in August.
The Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture and Tourism Corporation announced the release of the August issue of ‘METI (Monthly Eating Travel Initiative),’ a culinary content series introducing seasonal regional ingredients and food culture.
This issue is themed around ‘Chewy Texture, Its Joy.’ It introduces the region’s seasonal food culture and summer gourmet travel destinations through Cheongdo, the nation’s largest enoki mushroom producing area, and the clams found along the East Coast of Gyeongbuk, including Pohang, Yeongdeok, and Uljin.
Cheongdo is a major production area, accounting for approximately 25% of the domestic enoki mushroom production. Based on large-scale production facilities, we operate an automated and modernized cultivation system and supply products not only to the domestic market but also to overseas markets such as Southeast Asia.
Cheongdo Enoki Mushrooms are certified by the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service, and quality control is maintained through pesticide-free and eco-friendly cultivation. With excellent freshness and shelf life, they can be used in various dishes such as stews, hot pots, and shabu-shabu, and can also be enjoyed in the form of pancakes or rolls.
During the summer, surf clams are considered another seasonal delicacy along the East Coast. Surf clams found along the East Coast of North Gyeongsang Province, including Pohang, Yeongdeok, and Uljin, are characterized by their firm flesh and unique umami flavor.
Due to their characteristic of growing in sand, they are suitable for dishes that highlight the firm flesh and refreshing broth. They can be enjoyed in various menus such as surf clam soup, grilled clams, kalguksu (noodle soup), and vongole, making them known as a representative summer seafood of the East Coast. In particular, in some areas along the East Coast, visitors can experience surf clams firsthand in conjunction with summer clamming activities, making this a tourism content that allows them to experience both the region's natural environment and gourmet cuisine.
The Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture and Tourism Corporation plans to go beyond simply introducing seasonal ingredients and instead link them with local tourism resources to provide seasonal culinary experiences to tourists visiting Gyeongbuk.
Kim Nam-il, President of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture and Tourism Corporation, stated, "Gyeongbuk is a region rich in gastronomic resources where visitors can taste a variety of ingredients depending on the season in each area." He added, "In August, I hope visitors will experience Gyeongbuk's seasonal cuisine and the region's charm through Cheongdo enoki mushrooms and East Coast surf clams."
'Gyeongbuk Gourmet Travel METI' is a project that introduces Gyeongbuk's seasonal ingredients and local food culture by grouping them under a single theme each month. Related content, including the August issue, can be found on the official websites and social media platforms of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture and Tourism Corporation and Gyeongbuk Nadri.
