Hyundai Motor Group Launches Parking Robot Demonstration Project at ‘Hillstate The Wave City’

A consortium comprising Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai WIA, and Hyundai E&C is launching a full-scale demonstration project for robot-based smart parking technology at "Hillstate The Wave City" in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, to address the chronic parking shortages and safety issues in multi-unit residential complexes. This project is being conducted with the approval of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Smart City Regulatory Sandbox and state funding.

Recently, the shortage of space and congestion in underground parking lots have intensified due to the increase in vehicle ownership and the concentration of parking demand during specific time periods. Drivers not only waste time and fuel searching for empty spaces on their own, but the mixing of vehicle and pedestrian traffic also poses a significant risk of safety accidents.

Through this demonstration, the consortium plans to verify a smart parking operation model suitable for multi-unit residential environments and resolve these fundamental urban problems.

The demonstration project will be conducted using two sets of Hyundai WIA parking robots in a dedicated area comprising a total of 53 parking spaces on the first basement level of Hillstate The Wave City. Hyundai WIA’s parking robot operates by having a pair of thin, wide robots, each 110mm thick, enter the vehicle's underside, lift the wheels, and move the vehicle.

Equipped with LiDAR sensors, it accurately recognizes the size and position of the vehicle's wheels and can automatically park large SUVs weighing up to 3.4 tons at a maximum speed of 1.2 meters per second. Notably, it can move in all directions—forward, backward, left, and right—enabling flexible vehicle placement even in confined spaces.

The system works by having the driver exit the vehicle at a designated entry/exit zone and call the vehicle via a kiosk or wall pad; the parking robot then detects the tires, lifts them, and automatically transports the vehicle to an empty parking space.

The expected benefits from this demonstration are significant. By eliminating the time spent searching for empty spaces, parking capacity improves by a minimum of 20% to a maximum of 50% compared to the same area. Furthermore, the complete separation of pedestrian and vehicle traffic reduces the risk of accidents, while minimizing unnecessary vehicle movement and idling yields environmental benefits by reducing carbon emissions and fine dust. Hyundai Motor Group plans to closely measure data such as entry and exit times, waiting times, parking success rates, robot utilization rates, and parking space efficiency improvement rates during the demonstration period.

Based on this, the company plans to refine measures for improving relevant laws and regulations, and construct a virtual environment model to derive criteria for calculating the optimal number of parking spaces and robots for various building types, including residential, commercial, office, and public spaces.

Hyundai Motor Group expects this project to go beyond simple technology verification and serve as an opportunity to solve fundamental urban problems and expand into the global market.

A Hyundai Motor Group official stated, "This demonstration project for parking robots in multi-unit residential buildings is a crucial step in establishing a new parking paradigm for the smart city era, going beyond mere technology verification." The official added, "We plan to comprehensively verify the operational stability, efficiency, and user convenience of parking robots in a real-life living environment—a multi-unit residential building—to derive a standard model that can be expanded to various urban spaces both domestically and internationally."
