SKT Recreates 10 Nationwide Courses Tracing the Footsteps of 18,776 Independence Activists

SK Telecom announced on the 10th that, in cooperation with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and the Independence Hall of Korea, it is launching the "Remembering 18,776 Independence Activists" campaign to mark the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation. The campaign involves creating walking courses for future generations to follow in the footsteps of martyrs and patriots.

This campaign was designed with the aim of remembering the names of independence activists, whose existence is currently limited to records, within our daily lives.

To this end, SKT analyzed the activity records of 18,776 independence activists registered at the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs' Electronic Archives of Merit using its proprietary AI Foundation model, "A.X K2." By combining this with location-based data, the records were restored into walking and running courses across 10 locations nationwide.

The courses span a total of 44.6 km, covering major cities from Seoul to Jeju. Figures from various walks of life participated in the campaign, including SKT CEO Jeong Jae-heon, singer Sean, marathoner Lee Bong-ju, musical actress Hong Ji-min, and descendants of independence activists. At the ‘Remembering the Women Who Led Independence’ course in Jongno-gu, Seoul, CEO Jeong Jae-heon and singer Sean ran together from Saemunan Church, passing through the site of Geunu Hall and Song Gye-wol’s boarding house, to Yeollin Songhyeon Green Plaza, reflecting on the spirit of female independence activists.

Marathoner Lee Bong-ju ran the ‘Remembering the Independence Movement Illuminated by Education’ course, which connects Jung-gu and Jongno-gu in Seoul, while musical actress Hong Ji-min, whose father was an independence activist, took on the ‘Remembering Heroes in School Uniforms’ course in Incheon to shed light on anti-Japanese activities led by students.

Additionally, the ‘Remembering the Flame of Cheonan Manse’ course in Cheonan was made more meaningful with the participation of Choi Seo-yoon, the great-granddaughter of independence activist Lee Gyo-ok.

A relay video featuring participants personally running the courses to honor the spirit of the patriotic martyrs has been released on SKT’s official YouTube channel and will also be screened at the Media Cube inside the Independence Hall of Korea for one month. Ordinary citizens can also participate in the campaign by walking or running along 10 courses nationwide using the running app ‘RunDay’.

SKT plans to award entry tickets for the ‘2026 Infinite Challenge Run in Gyeongju’ through a lottery to customers who complete the courses or leave supportive comments on the official YouTube video.

Lee Seung-yeol, Head of Strategy Communications at SKT, said, “We organized this campaign so that citizens can remember the names of the 18,776 people recorded in history by walking and running themselves,” adding, “We will continue our activities to raise awareness of the footsteps of independence activists.”
