Bumhan Fuel Cell Develops Korea's First '10kW-Class Cascade SOFC'

Surpassing Japan's 5kW Class... Securing Supply Chain Competitiveness Through Localization of Core Components

Amidst fierce competition to secure "high-efficiency power sources" in the era of AI data centers, which demand extreme power consumption, Bumhan Fuel Cell, a domestic hydrogen fuel cell specialist, has secured next-generation fuel cell technology with unrivaled power generation efficiency for the first time in Korea.

Bumhan Fuel Cell (CEO Kim Hyung-seok) announced that it has successfully developed a "10kW-Class Cascade Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC)" system through a national project funded by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KIET).

The cascade method is a technology that re-injects unreacted hydrogen remaining after the reaction in the primary stack into the secondary stack to generate power a second time, rather than discarding it. It is considered a next-generation high-efficiency mechanism that drastically increases power generation efficiency by pushing fuel utilization rates to the extreme.

Bumhan Fuel Cell has secured proprietary Hot Box and system control technologies dedicated to cascade technology, achieving a power generation efficiency of 60.8% at a 10kW capacity. This figure easily surpasses the efficiency limitations of existing single-stack systems. It is particularly significant as it represents the first domestic implementation of a 10kW system—the first step toward large-capacity production—by overcoming the technological gap established by Japan, which had previously commercialized 5kW-class cascade SOFCs.

Regarding technological independence, domestic technology was actively applied to all core components constituting the system, including the stack, fuel reformer, metal separator, heat exchanger, and inverter. By localizing the SOFC supply chain, which previously relied heavily on foreign sources, the company is credited with simultaneously boosting the price competitiveness and self-reliance of the entire domestic hydrogen industry ecosystem.

The cascade technology secured this time serves as a key foundation that, when combined with ceramic proton conductors (CPCs)—a next-generation electrolyte—it will be possible to reach a power generation efficiency level of up to 70%, often referred to as the "dream efficiency." "We expect Cascade SOFCs to have high potential for application in various fields requiring high-efficiency power sources, such as fuel cell power plants and data centers," an official from Bumhan Fuel Cell stated. "Based on the achievements of this R&D, we plan to pursue product commercialization and expand our business scope into the power generation fuel cell market, including AI data centers."
