Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of Jeonnam Gwangju, Conducts Emergency On-Site Inspection of Muan Hyeon-gyeong Pumping Station… “Maintaining Uninterrupted Agricultural Water Supply”

Inspects emergency measures for drought-vulnerable areas in Muan and Sinan amidst insufficient rainfall and declining reservoir levels; orders detailed inspection of the operational status of 15 800mm pumps and water supply systems… All-out effort for preemptive response, including the injection of reserve funds and well development, should the drought become prolonged

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of the Integrated Special City of Jeonnam Gwangju, visited key agricultural production infrastructure in the Yeongsan River basin to conduct an emergency on-site inspection in response to the recent persistent lack of rainfall and the declining water levels in agricultural reservoirs.

On the 6th, Mayor Min visited the Hyeon-gyeong Pumping Station in Muan-gun to personally inspect the status of agricultural water supply for drought response and the emergency operational status of the pumping facilities. He urged on-site officials to do their utmost to ensure an uninterrupted water supply to prevent damage to farms. This site visit was conducted to personally verify water supply measures for agricultural land in the Muan and Sinan regions, which are suffering from the aftermath of the drought, and to strengthen the emergency response system in preparation for a prolonged drought.

After receiving a report on the operation status of the pumping station, the water supply system, and the condition of the facilities at the site, Mayor Min thoroughly inspected the emergency operation systems of the pumping equipment and transmission facilities.

In particular, he ordered meticulous management of water levels and flow rates for each supply system to ensure that water reaches areas severely vulnerable to drought, including reservoir beneficiaries with low water levels, the ends of irrigation canals, and rain-fed rice paddies. He also instructed that patrols and inspections of pumping facilities and irrigation canals be intensified.

The Hyeon-gyeong Pumping Station is a key infrastructure that draws agricultural water from the Yeongsan River and supplies it to farmland in the Muan and Sinan regions. The total beneficiary area amounts to 11,100 hectares, and it is equipped with the capacity to pump 1,405 tons of water per minute. Fifteen 800mm double-suction pumps, installed in 2012, are currently in operation as core facilities.

The collected agricultural water is supplied via the supply system to areas including the Cheonggye region in Muan (783 ha), the Mangun and Abhae regions in Muan and Sinan (4,123 ha), and the Haeje and Jido regions in Muan and Sinan (6,194 ha), supporting farming activities for local households.

Currently, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is operating an "Agricultural Water Drought Countermeasure Situation Room" to monitor reservoir water levels and crop growth conditions within its jurisdiction in real time. The city is continuously implementing multifaceted water securing measures tailored to regional conditions, such as pumping river water, refilling reservoirs, reusing drainage water, operating wells, and multi-stage pumping.

If the drought situation worsens in the future, the city plans to immediately allocate reserve funds to significantly expand emergency water supply measures, including well development, the installation of additional pumping facilities, riverbed excavation, and the operation of water tankers. In addition, plans are in place to rapidly deploy available personnel and equipment to the site through close cooperation with relevant agencies.

Mayor Min Hyeong-bae emphasized, “The Hyeon-gyeong Pumping Station is a critical core facility that supplies water from the Yeongsan River to agricultural lands in the Muan and Sinan regions,” adding, “Please ensure that farmers do not face difficulties in farming due to water shortages by maintaining the stable operation of the pumping facility and meticulously managing the entire water supply process.”

He further stated, “In preparation for the possibility of a prolonged drought, we will make maximum use of all available water sources, including reservoirs, pumping stations, and wells, and minimize crop damage through on-site customized measures.”
