브레이크뉴스 박동제 기자= ‘글로벌 슈퍼스타’ 그룹 방탄소년단(BTS / RM, 진, 슈가, 제이홉, 지민, 뷔, 정국)이 내년 2월 열리는 ‘제69회 그래미 어워즈’에 음악을 출품하지 않기로 결정한 가운데, 보이콧 선언 관련해 그래미 측이 입장을 밝혔다.
그래미 어워즈를 주최하는 레코딩 아카데미의 하비 메이슨 주니어 최고경영자(CEO)는 29일(현지시간) SNS에 공식입장을 내고 “방탄소년단이 올해 그래미 어워드에 참여하지 않기로 결정했다는 소식을 듣고 슬펐지만, 음악 창작자로서 그들의 결정을 이해하고 존중한다”고 전했다.
이어 “아시안 팝(Asian Pop) 부문은 아시아에서 나오는 팝 예술성의 깊이, 다양성, 성장을 기념하기 위해 신설됐다. 이 새로운 부문의 취지는 아티스트들에게 온전한 주목의 기회를 제공하는 것”이라며 “결코 분리하기 위함은 아니다. 1만 5천명에 달하는 그래미 투표단의 인정을 받는 대상의 범위를 확장하기 위한 것이다”고 설명했다.
그러면서 “분명히 말씀드리고 싶다. 아시안 팝, 재즈, 컨트리와 같은 장르 부문에 음악을 제출한다고 해서 아티스트가 ‘올해의 레코드’, ‘올해의 앨범’, ‘올해의 노래’ 등 본상(General Field) 심사 대상에서 제외되지는 않는다”며 “본상은 장르에 관계없이 자격을 갖춘 모든 작업물에 항상 열려 있으며, 아티스트는 당연히 두 부문 모두를 추구할 수 있다”고 밝혔다.

방탄소년단 멤버 7인은 지난 29일 각자의 SNS(사회관계망서비스)를 통해 “저희는 올해 그래미에 출품하지 않기로 했다”며 “음악이 지역이나 언어로 구분되기보다 음악 그 자체로 들리고 사랑받을 수 있기를 바란다”며 “늘 함께해 주는 아미(방탄소년단 팬덤명)와 모든 분들께 감사드린다”고 전했다.
이는 ‘그래미 어워즈’가 지난달 한국·중국·일본 등 아시아권 음악을 구분해 ‘베스트 아시안 팝 뮤직 퍼포먼스’ 부문을 새롭게 도입한다고 발표한 것에 대한 보이콧을 선언한 것으로 해석되며 관심을 모았다.
한편, 미국 레코딩 아카데미가 주관하는 그래미 어워즈는 빌보드 뮤직 어워즈, 아메리칸 뮤직 어워즈와 함께 미국 3대 대중음악 시상식으로 불린다.

On the 29th, the seven members of BTS announced via their respective social media accounts, “We have decided not to submit entries to this year’s Grammys,” adding, “We hope that music can be heard and loved for its own sake, rather than being categorized by region or language,” and “We thank ARMY (BTS’s fandom name) and everyone who is always with us.”
