‘30년의 기록, 홍천 찰옥수수의 새로운 미래를 쓰다’라는 슬로건 아래 열린 이날 개막식에는 지역 농업인과 주민, 관광객 등이 대거 참석해 서른 번째를 맞이한 축제의 출발을 함께 축하했다.

행사는 식전 공연을 시작으로 국민의례, 내빈 소개, 축제 발전 유공자 표창, 찰옥수수 왕 시상, 옥수수 술 빚기 대회 시상, 개막 퍼포먼스 순으로 다채롭게 진행됐다.

신영재 홍천군수는 축제 발전과 찰옥수수 경쟁력 향상에 이바지한 심영주 홍천농협 조합장, 김희철 화촌농협 조합장, 권철중 서홍천농협 조합장, 허남영 영귀미농협 조합장에게 표창장을 수여하며 그간의 노고를 치하했다.

이어 고품질 찰옥수수 생산에 앞장선 ‘찰옥수수 왕’ 시상식에서는 박영호(영귀미면), 이용일(화촌면), 김형동(두촌면), 류재익(남면) 씨가 수상의 영예를 안았다. 홍천 찰옥수수를 활용한 전통주의 가능성을 알린 ‘옥수수 술 빚기 대회’에서는 최우혁 씨가 대상을, 한상훈 씨가 금상을 차지하며 축제의 의미를 한층 더했다.

신영재 군수는 “제30회 홍천찰옥수수축제는 지난 30년간 농업인과 군민, 관광객이 한마음으로 만들어 온 홍천의 자랑스러운 대표 여름 축제”라며, “축제 발전에 헌신해 주신 농협과 농업인 여러분께 깊이 감사드린다”고 전했다.
또한 “앞으로도 홍천 찰옥수수의 브랜드 가치와 품질 경쟁력을 높일 수 있도록 생산 기반과 상품 개발을 적극 지원하고, 축제가 농가 소득 증대와 지역경제 활성화의 마중물이 되도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 강조했다.
한편, 개막식 이후에는 참여형 무대 행사(옥수수 빨리 먹기, 탑 쌓기 등)와 다채로운 공연이 이어졌다. 행사장 곳곳에는 홍천 찰옥수수 및 농특산물 판매장, 체험 부스, 워터파크 등이 마련돼 방문객들에게 즐거움을 선사하고 있다. 이번 축제는 오는 19일까지 3일간 토리숲 일원에서 펼쳐진다.
