현대 민주주의 체제에서 대통령은 국민의 위임을 받은 정당한 주권의 대행자다. 반면 대기업 총수는 사적 이익과 주주 가치를 극대화하는 자본의 대표다. 따라서 대통령이 총수 앞에서 지나치게 굴신(屈身)하는 듯한 태도는, 공적 영역이 사적 영역에, 그리고 정치적 정당성이 경제적 논리에 굴복하는 듯한 시각적 충격을 준다.

대기업의 투자를 유치하고 경제 지표를 올린다는 실용적 목적에만 매몰되면, 국가가 마땅히 지켜야 할 공공성, 노동자의 권리, 부의 재분배 같은 헌법적 가치들은 손쉽게 뒷전으로 밀려난다.
철학이 없는 정치는 자본이 요구하는 효율성의 논리를 무비판적으로 수용하게 되며, 결국 국가 권력이 자본을 통제하는 것이 아니라 자본의 요구를 수행하는 대리인으로 전락하는 위험을 낳는다.
정치에 철학이 결여될 때, 국가는 사회적 약자를 보호하는 울타리가 아니라 거대 자본의 운동장으로 변모하기 쉽다.
