Korea Owns 30-40 Satellites... “Entering the Global Space War”

[Essay-style Approach] As the owner of a media company (Break News), I have been arguing that media companies should also own satellites...

- Moon Il-suk, Publisher of this Newspaper

The Republic of Korea has also entered and joined the era of the global space war, beginning to compete with various nations. The number of satellites owned by SpaceX, headed by Elon Musk of the United States, is beyond imagination. According to statistics on satellites launched into space, the number of active satellites owned by SpaceX in the U.S. amounts to approximately 10,670. The number of satellites owned by the Republic of Korea is at the level of 30 to 40. Compared to the United States, it is a drop in the ocean. The number of security and military satellites has not been disclosed, so the statistical figures are uncertain.

On July 7, the Next-Generation Medium Satellite No. 4, South Korea's first agricultural and forestry satellite, was launched and successfully settled into space. As an agricultural and forestry satellite, the Next-Generation Medium Satellite No. 4 is South Korea's first public observation satellite dedicated to agriculture and forestry. At 4:12 PM on July 7, it was successfully launched into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. It is reported that it successfully established its first communication in a sun-synchronous circular orbit at an altitude of approximately 888 km. Following approximately four months of initial operation and performance checks, it is scheduled to begin its full-scale mission in the first half of 2027.

This was followed by an announcement that development costs and time were significantly reduced by utilizing the 500kg-class standard platform technology secured through the development of the Next-Generation Medium Satellites No. 1 and 2. Weighing 514 kg, it is based on a standard 500 kg class platform and is said to feature an efficient design. It is equipped with a customized optical payload developed using core domestic space technologies, including a domestically produced, independently developed wide-area observation camera. It is capable of accumulating and observing precise agricultural data capable of identifying objects as small as 5 meters at sea level and 5 meters on the ground. With a width of 120 km, it can photograph the entire Korean Peninsula with just two or three passes. It is said to be able to repeatedly photograph the entire country every three days, enabling rapid tracking of weather and disaster changes.

With this, we have been able to independently secure basic agricultural and forestry data using our own satellite, which previously relied on overseas satellite imagery and field surveys. It proactively responds to fluctuations in crop prices by integrating and analyzing cultivation area, growth status, and crop conditions of major crops such as rice and soybeans with artificial intelligence (AI). Furthermore, it constantly tracks the spread of pests and diseases, and rapidly identifies damage from drought, reservoir collapses, or farmland flooding from space to establish control measures. With a much wider observation range than existing weather and land satellites, it is said to contribute significantly to preventing secondary damage by analyzing the area and intensity of large-scale wildfires and identifying undetected zones in landslide-prone areas. Of course, this satellite will also indirectly contribute to national defense and security.

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) comprehensively oversaw the entire development process, including design, manufacturing, testing, and verification, and is evaluated as having elevated the capabilities of domestic civilian satellite development to the next level. It is considered a successful example of collaboration that perfectly met the clear demands of the public sector through the joint participation of the Rural Development Administration and the Korea Forest Service, led by the Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA).

It is known that South Korea possesses approximately 30 to 40 artificial satellites in orbit as of 2026. Including the nation's first agricultural and forestry satellite (Next-Generation Medium-Sized Satellite No. 4), which was successfully launched on July 7, South Korea is rapidly expanding its satellite capabilities for military, public, and commercial purposes. The artificial satellites owned by the Republic of Korea are operated across various sectors according to their purpose. Satellites currently in active service include the recently launched Agriculture and Forestry Satellite No. 4, as well as Satellites No. 1 and No. 2, which are used for land and resource observation. The Arirang satellite series is a multi-purpose practical satellite equipped with ultra-high-resolution cameras and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capable of observing at night and in adverse weather conditions. The Chollian satellite monitors fine dust, weather changes, and the marine environment around the Korean Peninsula in real time from geostationary orbit. The lineup also includes the commercial Mugunghwa satellite series and the independent military reconnaissance satellites (Project 425) that are recently being put into service.

Under the leadership of the Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA), there are plans to deploy an additional 40 micro-satellite constellation systems to monitor the Korean Peninsula in real time by 2030. Furthermore, there are plans to increase the number of low-orbit communication and reconnaissance satellites, known as "Korean Starlink," to several hundred by 2035.

As the owner of a media company (Break News), I have argued that media companies should also own artificial satellites. It was out of a wish to be able to report on global information viewed from space, captured in real-time by satellites. I look forward to the arrival of such a time. moonilsuk@naver.com
