Economic Contribution of Top 100 Companies Surpasses 1,731 Trillion Won... Samsung Electronics 'Undisputed No. 1'

It was found that the economic contribution of the top 100 domestic companies by revenue exceeded 1,731 trillion won last year. This figure represents an increase of more than 7% compared to the previous year, driven by strong performance in key industries such as semiconductors, automobiles, and defense.

In particular, ahead of the government's "value-up" policies and amendments to the Commercial Act, shareholder returns, including the cancellation of treasury shares, surged by over 30%, contributing to the revitalization of the stock market.

Economic contribution refers to the total sum of costs paid to stakeholders—such as partner companies (transaction payments), employees (salaries), the government (taxes), shareholders (dividends and cancellation of treasury shares), creditors (interest), and society (donations)—for the economic value generated through a company's business activities. According to CEO Score on the 8th, a survey on the economic contribution of the top 100 companies by revenue (excluding public enterprises and financial companies) that submitted business reports among the 500 designated companies for 2026 revealed that their total economic contribution in 2025 was tallied at 1,731 trillion 159.9 billion won. This represents an increase of 118 trillion 687.7 billion won (7.4%) compared to 2024 (1,612 trillion 472.2 billion won).

Last year, the total revenue of the top 100 companies was 2,290 trillion 847.2 billion won, an 8.3% increase from the previous year. However, the ratio of economic contribution to revenue stood at 75.6%, a slight decrease of 0.6 percentage points from the previous year (76.2%).

By stakeholder, the expenses paid by companies to partner companies with whom they have business relationships amounted to the highest figure at 1,405 trillion 746.5 billion won. This represents a 6.4% increase compared to the previous year and recorded the largest share, accounting for 81.2% of the total economic contribution.

This was followed by employees (226.6425 trillion won), shareholders (41.8636 trillion won), the government (30.6407 trillion won), creditors (24.8567 trillion won), and society (1.41 trillion won).

The most notable aspect is the explosive growth in the shareholder return sector. Within the shareholder contribution, dividends increased by 12.1% year-on-year to 30.6507 trillion won, while the cancellation of treasury shares surged by a whopping 160.5% (6.9079 trillion won), rising from 4.305 trillion won to 11.2129 trillion won.

This is interpreted as a result of companies taking preemptive measures ahead of the enforcement of the Commercial Act this past March, which mandates the cancellation of acquired treasury shares within one year. Among the companies surveyed, 51 increased their dividends, while 16 expanded their treasury stock buybacks.

By company, Samsung Electronics maintained its undisputed top position with an economic contribution of 177.2497 trillion won. This represents a 12.5% increase from the previous year (157.5376 trillion won).

This was followed by Hyundai Motor (122.2432 trillion won), Kia (92.0718 trillion won), LG Electronics (77.1044 trillion won), Hyundai Mobis (56.2139 trillion won), SK On (52.3340 trillion won), Hanwha (44.9261 trillion won), SK Hynix (43.6306 trillion won), GS Caltex (42.8339 trillion won), and SK Energy (37.3486 trillion won). The economic contribution of the top 10 conglomerates accounted for 43% of the total contributions from the top 100 companies, indicating that the disparity and concentration of power among large corporations are continuing to intensify.

In the shareholder return sector, Samsung Electronics took an overwhelming first place by spending 14.1569 trillion won (11.1079 trillion won in dividends and 3.049 trillion won in treasury stock cancellations), becoming the only company among the top 100 to exceed 10 trillion won.

Hyundai Motor Company ranked second in shareholder returns (3.5343 trillion won), followed by Kia (3.3107 trillion won) in third place. The rankings continued with HMM (2.8036 trillion won), SK Hynix (2.1087 trillion won), Korea Zinc (2.0768 trillion won), KT&G (1.3818 trillion won), Hyundai Mobis (1.1541 trillion won), Samsung C&T (1.1046 trillion won), and POSCO (800.2 billion won). Korea Zinc, which has been embroiled in a management rights dispute, drew attention by recording 2.0768 trillion won in shareholder returns, a 371.1% surge year-on-year driven by an expanded cancellation of treasury shares.

SK On recorded the largest increase in economic contribution last year. Fueled by the effects of large-scale mergers and M&As, SK On recorded 52.334 trillion won, a jump of 38.9035 trillion won from the previous year (13.4305 trillion won).

This was followed by Samsung Electronics (up 19.7121 trillion won), Hanwha (up 16.175 trillion won), and Hanwha Aerospace (up 13.1172 trillion won), in that order of the largest increases. Hankook Tire & Technology and Korean Air also ranked among the top performers, with their contributions rising significantly due to factors such as M&As.

Conversely, the oil refining and construction industries, which were hit hard by sluggish market conditions, saw a significant decrease in their economic contributions. SK Energy recorded the largest decline, falling by 3.9102 trillion won from the previous year to 37.3486 trillion won.

This was followed by Hyundai Engineering & Construction (down 2.93 trillion won), GS Caltex (down 2.8195 trillion won), HD Hyundai Oilbank (down 2.5311 trillion won), POSCO E&C (down 2.3649 trillion won), Samsung SDI (down 2.3252 trillion won), S-Oil (down 2.2410 trillion won), CJ CheilJedang (down 2.1443 trillion won), Daewoo Engineering & Construction (down 2.0856 trillion won), and LG Chem (down 2.0778 trillion won), in that order of largest declines.
