US Launches Airstrikes on Iran Over Attacks on Oil Tankers in Hormuz: "Clear Ceasefire Violation"

The United States launched airstrikes on Iranian military facilities in response to Iran's repeated attacks on vessels not using designated shipping lanes within the Strait of Hormuz.

Tensions are rising again between the two nations, which had been continuing ceasefire negotiations, with the US even prematurely ending sanctions waivers for Iranian crude oil transactions.

On the 7th (local time), the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced via the social networking service X that it had "launched powerful airstrikes against Iran to hold them accountable for attacking merchant vessels carrying civilians in international waters."

CENTCOM stated that "these airstrikes are a response to Iran's attacks on three merchant ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz," and criticized Iran's actions as "an unjustifiable and dangerous act and a clear violation of the ceasefire." Although the United States and Iran reportedly agreed on the 29th of last month to suspend mutual attacks, the U.S. military has resumed military action following a series of recent attacks suspected to be carried out by Iran.

According to a report by the U.S. media outlet Axios, the targets of the airstrikes included Iran's air defense network, coastal surveillance facilities, surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, drone launch bases, and port facilities.

Iranian media reported that explosions were heard in port cities such as Bandar Abbas and Sirik, as well as around Qeshm Island.

According to the UK Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) and other sources, three vessels, including oil tankers, operating near the Strait of Hormuz were attacked over the past 24 hours. The damaged ships included the Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier 'Al Ekhayat,' and Qatar has blamed Iran for the attacks. The Associated Press reported that the vessels involved appeared to have used the Omani route instead of the shipping lanes designated by Iran, citing the fact that the attacks occurred near the coasts of Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Iran has repeatedly warned of the possibility of attacks on vessels not using its designated routes.

In addition, the United States has once again tightened sanctions against Iran.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that it would terminate the measures allowing trade in Iranian crude oil, petroleum, and petrochemical products, which had been in effect since the 21st of last month, effective the 7th. Initially, the U.S. had temporarily eased sanctions for 60 days following the signing of a previous Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Iran, but decided to withdraw the measure early, just about 15 days after its implementation.

A U.S. government official explained to the AP, "The attacks in the Strait of Hormuz were unacceptable acts, and corresponding measures were necessary."

In response, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement protesting that the U.S. withdrawal of sanctions waivers was a measure that violated the MOU between the two countries. Axios analyzed that "this clash risks driving the U.S. and Iran into a new vicious cycle of retaliation, shaking the fragile MOU signed by U.S. President Donald Trump less than three weeks ago."

Meanwhile, the two countries held indirect working-level negotiations through a mediator in Doha, Qatar on the 1st and agreed to continue follow-up talks after the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Although there are reports that additional negotiations will be held on the 11th under the mediation of Pakistan, there has been no official announcement from either country yet.
