Jeong Cheong-rae: "Struggle is the Only Way to Survive"... "Review Lee Jae-myung's Struggle!"
- Moon Il-suk, Publisher of this Newspaper
The Democratic Party of Korea is approaching its August 17 National Convention. A new party leader will be elected at this convention. As this party leader will hold the power to nominate candidates for the April 2028 National Assembly elections, a power struggle has erupted within the party. Consequently, the power struggle between President Lee Jae-myung and Democratic Party Leader Jeong Cheong-rae has become a major topic of public discussion.
During his closing remarks at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the morning of June 10, Democratic Party Leader Jeong Cheong-rae stated, "The people are eternal, but the administration is short." This statement came immediately after President Lee Jae-myung gave the impression of treating him poorly during his press conference marking the first anniversary of his inauguration and his departure for an overseas trip on June 8.
The Blue House responded coldly to this remark. During an official briefing, a Blue House official adopted a cautious stance of refraining from intervention on the surface, stating, "It is inappropriate for the Blue House to directly comment on matters concerning the National Assembly and party affairs regarding the ruling party leader's remarks at the Supreme Council meeting." However, contrary to this official position, the atmosphere within the Blue House is reportedly very cold and agitated. It is said that remarks such as "Are you suggesting we split the party?" were even made. Within the party and the Blue House, strong dissatisfaction was expressed regarding Representative Chung Cheong-rae's remarks, with some asking, "Isn't this effectively a proposal to split the party?"
Some officials within the Democratic Party of Korea also expressed anger regarding Representative Chung Cheong-rae's use of expressions directed at incumbent President Lee Jae-myung that he had previously employed during the political turmoil surrounding the impeachment and removal of former Presidents Park Geun-hye and Yoon Suk-yeol, stating, "This is no different from the ruling party shaking up the administration and threatening the President with impeachment." Analysis suggests that Representative Chung Cheong-rae demonstrated his determination to confront the situation head-on by making these remarks at a Supreme Council meeting, as the pro-Lee Jae-myung faction pressured him to resign and forgo a second term over the issue of responsibility for the results of the June 3 local elections. The conflict between the pro-Lee faction and Representative Chung’s camp has escalated into an all-out war ahead of the national convention, with key lawmakers of the pro-Lee faction demanding his immediate resignation, stating that his language was "highly inappropriate for the leader of the ruling party."
President Lee Jae-myung, who was staying in Italy during his European tour, stated on June 13 (local time) on X (formerly Twitter), "The ruling party's passion must be directed toward the entire nation, not just our own camp." He added, "While it is important for the opposition party to monitor, check, and attack the ruling party and the government, it is important for the ruling party to demonstrate competence, performance, inclusiveness, and unity in taking responsibility for the power given to it." He also added, “The ruling party, having already succeeded in taking power, can realize its values and beliefs through actions rather than mere claims using the official authority granted to it; however, it must bear full responsibility for the nation’s future and the lives of all citizens, and seeks re-election through achievements proven by results.” The underlying motive behind these remarks appears to be aimed at Democratic Party of Korea leader Chung Cheong-rae and the current party leadership.
However, what stance should Representative Chung Cheong-rae take in this situation?
If the Blue House, where the President serves a five-year term, is considered the mainstream of power, then the party may be the non-mainstream. Furthermore, politicians grow through ceaseless struggle. If we look back at the current leader’s process of seizing power, President Lee Jae-myung also engaged in a continuous series of struggles before becoming president. He became president by winning those struggles. Examining the major struggles that precede a president’s inauguration reveals what a power struggle truly is.
President Lee Jae-myung’s political career began with on-the-ground struggles during his days as a civic activist, followed by policy and physical struggles during his tenure as Mayor of Seongnam and Governor of Gyeonggi Province. The process leading up to his seizure of party leadership following his presidential election defeat was also consistently characterized by a struggle for political survival. Notably, immediately after his defeat in the 2022 presidential election, he entered the National Assembly through a by-election in Incheon's Gyeyang-eul district and was subsequently elected as the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, standing at the center of the party. He faced his greatest crisis, including the issuance of an arrest warrant amidst numerous legal risks, such as allegations of preferential treatment in the Daejang-dong and Wirye development projects. He rallied his forces through the National Assembly's rejection of the motion for arrest and the court's dismissal of the warrant. He seized power through a landslide victory in the 22nd General Election and a bid for the presidency. He achieved a massive victory in the 2024 General Election after decisively purging and reforming the party's non-Lee faction. Since then, he has solidified his control of the party and his position as a leading contender for the next presidency. It was a continuous series of struggles; having gone through such a process of struggle, he was eventually elected as the 21st President.
Party Leader Jeong Cheong-rae. For him to succeed politically, he will have to undergo a process of struggle similar to that of President Lee Jae-myung—a tireless struggle. Party Leader Jeong Cheong-rae, only a nationwide struggle may be the way to survive. Representative Jeong Cheong-rae, a fierce struggle is the only way to survive.
Representative Chung Cheong-rae is from Chungcheong Province. If he is re-elected as leader at the Democratic Party of Korea's August 17 National Convention, a path may open for him to pursue the grand ambition of becoming the first president from the Chungcheong region. Otherwise, he will not even be able to take that first step. Therefore, this is a moment of absolute crisis. Representative Chung Cheong-rae, meditate on this!
If he wins through that struggle, he will be able to save both himself and the party. Show us what a clear struggle for the future of the nation and the people truly is. Reflect on and review Lee Jae-myung's struggle! moonilsuk@naver.com
