Time Saved by AI: Large Corporations for ‘New Business,’ SMEs for ‘Rest’... Urgent Need to Address Infrastructure Gap
As the use of Generative AI spreads, an analysis suggests that the gap in utilization between large corporations and SMEs can be significantly narrowed depending on corporate support systems and organizational environments.
The Economic Research Institute of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) released a report titled "The Gap Between Large and SMEs in Generative AI Utilization: The Role of Capabilities and Organizational Environment," based on a survey of approximately 3,000 wage earners aged 20 or older nationwide.
According to the report, the gap in simple Generative AI utilization rates between large corporations and SMEs was recorded at 13.8 percentage points (66.5% for large corporations and 52.7% for SMEs).
However, the pure gap based on firm size, after controlling for exogenous variables such as corporate support systems, infrastructure, and employees' prompt engineering capabilities, decreased to around 4 percentage points. This suggests that the low AI utilization rate among SMEs stems from differences in the internal support environment rather than the company size itself.
When companies actively encourage the use of AI within the organization, the probability of employees utilizing AI increased by 15.5 percentage points; conversely, when companies support costs such as subscription fees, the rate increased by 8.1 percentage points. The study found that individual workers' prompt engineering capabilities (23.5%p) and receptive attitudes (21.4–40.0%p) also had a significant impact on utilization.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were found to have generally weaker infrastructure for AI adoption and support compared to large corporations. The percentage of respondents stating they lacked a roadmap for adopting generative AI was 70.4% for SMEs, surpassing that of large corporations (54.4%).
Regarding how time saved through AI utilization is reinvested, both groups cited "improving the quality of existing work" (32.6% for large corporations, 29.5% for SMEs) as their top priority.
However, results differed by company size regarding the second priority. While employees at large corporations spent the time saved on "performing new projects and tasks" (22.6%), SME employees chose "securing rest and personal time outside of work" (27.3%).
The report analyzed that these differences in time reinvestment methods could act as factors that exacerbate the productivity gap between large corporations and SMEs in the long term. Disparities in AI utilization based on industry and region were also clearly evident. While the gap in utilization rates between large and small/medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the service sector was 9.2 percentage points, the gap in the manufacturing sector reached 2.6 times at 24.2 percentage points.
The utilization rate of SMEs in the Seoul metropolitan area stood at 57.3%, surpassing that of non-metropolitan areas (47.8%), identifying "manufacturing SMEs in non-metropolitan areas" as a major vulnerable sector.
Regarding the reasons for hesitating to share AI utilization experiences within the company, both employees at large corporations (39.0%) and SMEs (33.6%) most frequently cited "concerns that the use of generative AI might be perceived negatively."
Park Yang-soo, President of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Economic Research Institute, stated, "The AI gap between large and SMEs stems from organizational environments such as corporate policies and support, rather than individual attitudes." He added, "It is crucial to design sophisticated systems that encompass both creating favorable conditions for adoption in SMEs and strengthening employee capabilities."
